You can find Mount Ovis in the central part of New York state. It is located very close to Cooperstown. To the west of Mount Ovis, there is a small body of water called Moe Pond.
The Story Behind the Name
Mount Ovis got its name around the year 1813. It was named by the grandfather of James Fenimore Cooper. James Fenimore Cooper later became a very famous American writer.
Cooper's grandfather used the mountain to raise some of the first Merino sheep in the area. Merino sheep are a special type of sheep known for their very fine wool. The scientific name for domestic sheep is Ovis aries, which is where the mountain's name, "Ovis," comes from.
One of the most famous sheep on the mountain was a ram named Sinbad. Sadly, Sinbad met an unusual end when he fell into a well and was killed. This story became a memorable part of the mountain's history.
