Mount Pilkington is a tall mountain located right on the border between Alberta and British Columbia in Canada. It stands at 3,301 meters (about 10,830 feet) high! This impressive peak was named in 1898 after Charles Pilkington, a well-known British mountaineer from the 1800s. Mount Pilkington is also special because it sits on the continental divide. This means that water flowing from one side of the mountain goes towards the Pacific Ocean, and water from the other side flows towards the Arctic Ocean. It's nestled between two large areas of ice and snow called the Campbell icefield and the Freshfield icefield.
The Pilkington Family's Climb
For many years, no one from the Pilkington family had ever reached the top of the mountain named after their ancestor. That changed on August 5th, 2019. On that day, Dr. Matthew B.G. Pilkington, who is a great-great-grandnephew of Charles Pilkington, successfully climbed to the very top. He became the first Pilkington family member to summit (reach the peak of) Mount Pilkington.
Soon after Matthew's climb, his son, Dante G.M. Pilkington, also made it to the summit. Dante became the second Pilkington to achieve this amazing feat. Their climbs were a special moment for the family, connecting them to the mountain's history and the mountaineer it was named after.
