Mount Rose is a small, historic place in Hopewell Township, Mercer County, New Jersey. It used to be called Stout's Corner. This community is located where several roads meet: Carter Road (also known as County Route 569), Hopewell-Princeton Road, Pennington-Rocky Hill Road, and Cherry Valley Road. It's a quiet area with a rich past.

What is Mount Rose?
Mount Rose is an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and businesses that are part of a larger township, not a separate town with its own local government. It's like a neighborhood within Hopewell Township. The area is named after a local gardener who lived there a long time ago. A part of the Rocky Hill Ridge that goes through the community is also called Mount Rose because of this gardener.
Early Days and Businesses
Mount Rose started growing around 1822. Richard Stout opened the first general store in the village that year. A few years later, in 1830, Josiah Cook and Reuben Savidge opened another store. This shows that the community was becoming a busy place.
Over time, Mount Rose had many different kinds of shops and services. There were two shoe shops, a dressmaker, and people who fixed wheels (wheelwrights). There was also a blacksmith, who worked with metal, and a harness shop for horses. Farmers could find tools at an agricultural implements warehouse. The community even had its own post office and a sawmill powered by steam. At its busiest, Mount Rose had about 20 houses.
The Whiskey House
In the mid-1800s, a man named Nathaniel Drake started a business in Mount Rose that made drinks from apples. He made apple cider, peach brandy, and apple whiskey. The building where his office was, known as the Whiskey House (located at 192 Pennington-Rocky Hill Road), is still standing today. It's a very important historical building and is listed on local, state, and national lists of historic places. It's the only building left from Drake's original business.
School and Changes Over Time
Mount Rose also had a schoolhouse for its children. The first school was a stone building. Later, a new school was built from wood. This wooden school building is now a private home.
After 1880, Mount Rose started to become smaller. This happened because a nearby town, Hopewell, began to grow much larger. Many people and businesses moved to Hopewell.
The Lawrence Hopewell Trail
Today, there are plans for a walking and biking path called the Lawrence Hopewell Trail. This trail is designed to connect different parts of the area, and it will go right through the Mount Rose community. This will help people explore the area and enjoy its natural beauty.
