A Look Back in Time: History of Washington Township
Washington Township was officially started in 1827. It is home to the famous Octagon House. This unique eight-sided house was built by Loren Andrus between 1858 and 1860.
A place called Westview Orchards began here in 1813. The Mount Vernon Cemetery also shows where an old settlement once was. This settlement was named after George Washington's home. It even had a post office in 1832. William Austin Burt was the first postmaster there.

Washington Township is in the northwest part of Macomb County. It shares a border with Oakland County to the west. The village of Romeo is partly in the northeast of the township.

The township is about 28 to 34 miles north of downtown Detroit.

Local Areas and Neighborhoods
Washington Township has a few smaller communities within it:
- Clifton Mills is a small community. It is located near the crossing of 31 Mile Road and Mt. Vernon Road.
- Mount Vernon is another community. You can find it in the southwest part of the township. It is at Mt. Vernon and 28 Mile Roads.
- Romeo is a village that is partly in the northeast corner of the township. Most of Romeo is actually in Bruce Township.
- Washington is a community in the south-central part of the township. It is just west of M-53.
Weather in the Township
The weather in Washington Township is much like that in Detroit. It can be a few degrees cooler, which often means more snow in the winter.
A notable weather event happened on July 2, 1997. A small tornado touched down at 26 Mile Road. It damaged parts of the East Village Estates trailer park. Six people were hurt during this event.

In 2010, there were 25,139 people living in Washington Township. This was a jump from 19,080 people in 2000. There were 9,258 households, which are groups of people living together.
Most of the people living here, about 94.8%, were White. Other groups included African American (1.6%), Native American (0.2%), and Asian (1.0%). About 3.9% of the population identified as Hispanic or Latino.
