Mount Wycheproof is a special place in the small town of Wycheproof, located in Victoria, Australia. This small mountain stands about 42 metres (138 ft) higher than the land around it. It reaches 147 metres (482 ft) above sea level. The town of Wycheproof is built right on the side of the mountain. You can also find a very rare rock here called Wycheproofite, which is only found in this area.

A Look Back in Time

The town of Wycheproof started on the mountain's southwestern side. People began settling here as early as 1846. However, the town itself was not officially planned until 1875. The name 'Wycheproof' comes from the local Aboriginal language. It means 'wichi-poorp', which translates to 'grass on a hill'.

Mount Wycheproof is important to the local community. Each year, there are fun races to the very top of the mountain. There are also many walking paths around the area. If you visit, you might even spot local wildlife. Keep an eye out for emus and kangaroos roaming freely.

What's Mount Wycheproof Made Of?

Mount Wycheproof is a granite outcrop. This means it is a big piece of granite rock that sticks out of the ground. Even though it's in a flat, grassy area, the mountain's rounded shape fits with the land around it. Mount Wycheproof is part of the low-lying Terrick Terrick range. It is similar to a nearby place called Pyramid Hill.

The mountain rises to 147 metres (482 ft) above sea level. This is only about 42 metres (138 ft) higher than the flat plains nearby. The hill has a rocky, cone-shaped top. This kind of peak is common in the western parts of Victoria.

Discovering Wycheproofite

Phosphate minerals are quite rare in Victoria, Australia. But the Wycheproof area is special because it has its own unique mineral. This mineral is called wycheproofite. You can recognize wycheproofite by its pretty pinkish color. It is also a transparent mineral, meaning you can see through it.
