Mountain Spring, San Diego County, California facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Mountain Spring is a special place located within Mountain Springs County Park in eastern San Diego County, California. It's like a hidden oasis! This spot is high up, about 2,431 feet (741 meters) above sea level.

Here, fresh water bubbles out of the mountainside. It's collected in a concrete pool. From there, the water flows down a small, green stream called an arroyo. This water eventually goes under Interstate 8 and joins Myer Creek, leading towards In-Ko-Pah Gorge.

Mountain Spring's Past

Mountain Spring has a cool history! From 1863, it was a super important stop for travelers. Imagine big stagecoaches and freight wagons rumbling along the old road between San Diego and Yuma, Arizona. They all needed water, and Mountain Spring was their go-to spot.

A Rest Stop for Travelers

This spring was perfectly located. It was right in the middle of two tough parts of the road. One part went over Table Mountain, and the other climbed up Devils Canyon from the Yuha Desert. Travelers and their animals were often tired and thirsty when they reached Mountain Spring.

Help for Tough Climbs

In 1863, two people named Pete Larkins and Joe Stancliff built a house right at Mountain Spring. They didn't just live there; they were like helpful roadside assistants! They sold supplies to passing travelers. Even cooler, they had a team of strong oxen. These oxen would help pull heavy wagons up the super steep, 30% grade in the canyon below. It was a huge help for people trying to get through the mountains!
