Mountain View Farm is a special old house located in Dublin, New Hampshire. It's a historic farmhouse that was first built around 1780. Later, in 1903, it was made bigger. This farm shows us what homes were like a long time ago in Dublin. It also reminds us of when Dublin became a popular place for people to spend their summers in the early 1900s. Because of its history, Mountain View Farm was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

Exploring Mountain View Farm's History

Mountain View Farm is in a quiet, natural area south of Dublin village. It sits on the eastern side of Mount Monadnock. You can find it at the end of Close Road, which is off Upper Jaffrey Road.

What Does Mountain View Farm Look Like?

The house has two main parts. The biggest part is a two-story wooden building. It has a pointed roof and its outside is covered with clapboards. The front of this part has six windows or doors, making it look almost the same on both sides. A porch with a sloped roof stretches across the front. Three small windows stick out from the roof.

Attached to this main part is an older, smaller section. This part was originally 1-1/2 stories tall. Its outside has been changed to match the newer main house. However, inside, you can still see many original features from the 1700s.

Who Lived at Mountain View Farm?

The oldest part of the house was built around 1780. It was built by a man named Nathan Bixby. He owned a lot of land and was an important person in Dublin. Nathan Bixby also fought in the American Revolutionary War.

Later, in the late 1800s, George and Alice Upton bought the house. In 1903, they hired a famous architect named John Lawrence Mauran. He was from Chicago. Mauran designed a new, larger summer house in the Georgian Revival style. The older house was then attached to it as a wing.

One of the most famous people to stay at Mountain View Farm was Mark Twain. He was a very well-known writer. Mark Twain rented the house in 1906 for his second visit to Dublin.
