What Was the War About?
The Mozambican Civil War was fought between two main groups. One was the ruling party of Mozambique, called the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (FRELIMO). The other was a rebel group known as the Mozambican National Resistance (RENAMO).
The Cold War's Influence
During the Cold War, many countries around the world were divided. Some supported the United States and its allies. Others supported the Soviet Union and its allies. This global tension often led to "proxy wars." In these wars, bigger countries supported different sides in smaller conflicts. The Mozambican Civil War was one such proxy war. Outside powers gave money, weapons, and training to FRELIMO or RENAMO.
How the War Affected Mozambique
The civil war caused a lot of damage across Mozambique. Many important things that people needed were destroyed.
Damage to Infrastructure
The war ruined much of the country's rural infrastructure. This included hospitals, which are vital for health. Rail lines and roads were also destroyed, making travel and trade very hard. Many schools were damaged or closed, stopping children from getting an education.
Impact on People
Both FRELIMO's forces and RENAMO's fighters were accused of doing terrible things during the war. These actions are called human rights abuses.
Child Soldiers
One sad part of the war was the use of child soldiers. Young boys and girls were forced to fight. This meant they could not live normal childhoods.
Landmines
Another big problem was the widespread use of land mines. These hidden explosives were placed all over the countryside. They stayed dangerous even after the war ended. Landmines hurt or killed many innocent people, including farmers and children. They also made it unsafe to use farmland.
The End of the War
The Mozambican Civil War finally ended in 1992. A peace agreement was signed. This helped Mozambique begin to rebuild and heal after many years of conflict.
