The Story of Mr. Goodbar
How It Began
Even though Hershey had made chocolate bars with almonds since 1908, Milton Hershey, the founder, wasn't sure about putting his famous name on a bar with peanuts. Peanuts were a newer ingredient in candy bars back then.
So, when Mr. Goodbar was first launched in 1925, it was introduced by a made-up company called "Chocolate Sales Corporation." This was a clever way to see if people would like the new peanut and chocolate mix. Luckily, they did!
Mr. Goodbar During Tough Times
The Great Depression was a very difficult time in the United States. Many people lost their jobs, and businesses struggled. Sales for Hershey's products dropped a lot.
But Milton Hershey was determined to protect his employees and the town he built for them in Hershey, Pennsylvania. He refused to lay off workers. Instead, he found new ways to keep the company strong.
Hershey started a special advertising campaign for Mr. Goodbar. They told people that the candy bar was a good source of protein because of the peanuts. This made it seem like a filling snack, almost like a small meal. They also lowered the price to two bars for just a nickel!
Thanks to these smart moves, along with some other changes, The Hershey Company came out of the Depression in a very strong position. By 1936, their profits were ten times higher than what they paid their workers.
Changes to the Recipe
More Peanuts!
Over the years, the recipe for Mr. Goodbar has changed a bit. In 1995, Hershey decided to add even more peanuts to the bar. This made it even "nuttier," just like one of its taglines says!
Ingredient Updates
In 2008, Hershey made another change to the recipe. They started using different oils instead of cocoa butter. Cocoa butter is a key ingredient in traditional chocolate.
Because of this change, the company also updated the product description and the packaging. According to food rules in the United States, if a chocolate product doesn't contain cocoa butter, it can't always be called "milk chocolate." Even though the bar still had chocolate, these new rules meant the description had to be adjusted.
