The Sweet History of Hershey's Chocolate Bars
The story of Hershey's chocolate bars began with Milton S. Hershey. He started his first successful candy business in 1886. It was called the Lancaster Caramel Company.
In 1893, Milton Hershey visited the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. There, he saw amazing German machines that made chocolate. He decided he wanted to make chocolate too!
After buying the chocolate machines, Hershey first used them to put chocolate on his caramels. The very next year, in 1894, he started the Hershey Chocolate Company. This new company was a part of his caramel business.
The Hershey Chocolate Company began making its own chocolate treats. These were called "sweet chocolate novelties." They were different from the plain, unsweetened chocolate used for baking.
In 1899, Milton Hershey created a special way to make chocolate. This method allowed him to make huge amounts of chocolate quickly. It was called the "Hershey Process."
In 1900, he sold his caramel company. But he kept the chocolate-making business. In November of that same year, the first Hershey chocolate bar was made and sold!
Different Kinds of Hershey's Bars
Hershey's makes many different types of chocolate bars. Here are some of the most popular ones:
Hershey's Milk Chocolate Bar
This is the original and most famous Hershey's bar. It's made with creamy milk chocolate. You can find it in many sizes, from small miniatures to giant 7-ounce bars. It has been a favorite since 1900.
Hershey's Milk Chocolate Bar with Almonds
This bar is just like the classic milk chocolate bar, but it has crunchy almonds mixed in. It was first introduced in 1908. It's a great choice if you love nuts with your chocolate.
Hershey's Special Dark Bar
If you like a slightly less sweet chocolate, the Special Dark bar is for you. It's made with 45% cacao, which gives it a richer, mildly sweet flavor. It has less sugar than the milk chocolate bars. This bar joined the family in 1939.
Special Dark Bar with Almonds
This version combines the mildly sweet Special Dark chocolate with crunchy almond pieces.
Hershey's Cookies 'n' Creme Bar
This bar is different because it's made with white creme instead of milk chocolate. It's filled with yummy chocolate cookie bits. It became a popular choice in 1994.
Hershey's Gold Bar
The Hershey's Gold bar is a unique treat. It has caramelized creme, peanuts, and pretzels. This gives it a sweet and salty crunch. It was released in 2017.
Hershey's Milk Chocolate & Reese's Pieces Candy Bar
This bar combines two favorites: Hershey's milk chocolate and colorful Reese's Pieces candies. It's a fun mix of chocolate and peanut butter flavors. It came out in 2018.
How Hershey's Milk Chocolate is Made
The special way Hershey's makes its milk chocolate is called the Hershey Process. This process uses fresh milk from local farms. Milton Hershey developed it to make chocolate for everyone.
Because of this process, Hershey's chocolate has a unique taste. Many people in the United States and the Philippines recognize this flavor. It's a company secret, but experts think the milk is treated in a special way. This gives the chocolate a slightly "tangy" taste. Many Americans have grown to love this flavor.
Over the years, Hershey's has made some changes to its chocolate. In 2006, they started adding an ingredient called polyglycerol polyricinoleate (PGPR) to some bars. This helps the chocolate flow better. However, in 2015, Hershey's announced they would start removing PGPR from most of their chocolates. They also removed artificial vanillin that year.
Even though they removed PGPR from some bars, they put it back in others, like the full-size Milk Chocolate with Almonds bar, in 2019. Hershey's says they use "natural flavor" in their chocolate, not vanilla.
More Fun Facts About Hershey's Bars
Besides the ones mentioned, Hershey's also makes other chocolate bars. These include Symphony bars (with milk chocolate or almond toffee), Mr. Goodbar (with peanuts), and Krackel (with crispy rice).
Over time, Hershey's has also offered limited-edition flavors. Some of these included Double Chocolate, Nut Lovers, and different "Twosomes" bars.
All standard-sized Hershey's bars usually have between 210 and 230 calories.
For people who follow Kashruth (Jewish dietary laws), all Hershey's bar flavors are approved as Kosher.
Did you know the biggest Hershey's bar you can buy weighs about 5 pounds (2.3 kg)? That's a lot of chocolate!
For its 100th anniversary, Hershey's even sold a special gold-colored bar. It had pretzels and peanuts inside.
