His Early Life
Muhammad Hashim Gazdar was born in 1895 in Jaisalmer, which is now part of India. His family came from the Rajput clans in Rajasthan. His father moved to Karachi after the British took over Sindh in 1843.
He finished his early studies at Sindh Madressah-tul-Islam in Karachi in 1911. Later, he went to Pune in Maharashtra to study engineering. He then moved to Bombay (now Mumbai) and worked on a project to help people from lower social groups. When that project didn't work out, he left it.
His Political Journey
After leaving the project, Hashim Gazdar returned to Karachi. He worked as an engineer for the local government. However, he soon resigned because he disagreed with G. M. Syed, who was the head of the board at that time.
Joining Politics
He then decided to join politics. In 1934, he was elected to the Bombay Legislative Council. This council helped make laws for the region of Sindh. He was active in politics through a group called the Sindh Ittehad party.
From May 1941 to May 1942, he served as the Mayor of Karachi. This was a very important role in the city.
Working for Pakistan
Later, he joined the All India Muslim League, led by Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah. This party was working to create an independent country for Muslims in India, which later became Pakistan. Hashim Gazdar was a friend and supporter of Muhammad Ali Jinnah in this important movement.
During this time, he was again elected as a member of the Legislative Assembly from Sindh. He also became the Deputy Speaker of the Assembly.
Representing Sindh
Muhammad Hashim Gazdar was one of the people who represented Sindh in the first meeting of Pakistan's Constituent Assembly. This important meeting happened on August 10, 1947, just four days before Pakistan became independent. It took place at the Sindh Assembly Building in Karachi. Other members from Sindh included Muhammed Ayub Khoro, J. Ram Das Doulat Ram, and Pirzada Abdul Sattar Abdul Rehman.
Hashim Gazdar played a very important role both before and after Pakistan was created. He was known as an honest lawmaker and a strong supporter of the Muslim League. He helped shape Pakistan's early politics.
He passed away in 1966 and is buried in the Muslim Marwari Graveyard in Mewashah, Karachi.
