Muhammad Ijaz-ul-Haq (Urdu: محمد اعجاز الحق) was born on February 20, 1952. He is a well-known Pakistani politician. He currently leads a political party called the Pakistan Muslim League (Z).
Ijaz-ul-Haq is the son of a former military leader of Pakistan, General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq. He has held important government jobs. From 2004 to 2007, he was the Minister for Religious Affairs and Minister for Minorities. This was during the time General Pervez Musharraf was in charge. Before that, from 1990 to 1993, he served as the Minister for Labour, Manpower, and Overseas Pakistanis under Nawaz Sharif's government.
He studied at Southern Illinois University in the United States. Before becoming a politician, Ijaz-ul-Haq worked as a banker. He started his political career in 1988 after his father passed away. He has been a member of the National Assembly of Pakistan, which is like their parliament, several times. His most recent term began in February 2024. He also served from 1990 to 1993, 2002 to 2007, and 2013 to 2018.

Early Life and Education
Ijaz-ul-Haq was born in Peshawar, Pakistan, on February 20, 1952. His father was General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq, who was born in Jalandhar. His mother was Shafiq Jahan, who was born in Uganda.
He earned a master's degree in business administration from Southern Illinois University in the United States. After finishing his studies, he worked as a banker for about ten years. He worked with Bank of America in Bahrain before he decided to enter politics in 1990.
Political Career
Starting in Politics: 1988–1993
After his father passed away in a plane crash in 1988, Ijaz-ul-Haq came back to Pakistan. He then decided to join politics.
He was first elected to the National Assembly of Pakistan in the 1990 Pakistani general election. He won seats from two areas: NA-39 Rawalpindi-IV and NA-72 Toba Tek Singh-II. He ran as a candidate for the Islami Jamhoori Ittehad (IJI) party.
Joining PML(N): 1993–2002
Ijaz-ul-Haq was elected to the National Assembly again in the 1993 Pakistani general election. This time, he ran as a candidate for the Pakistan Muslim League (N) (PML(N)) from NA-54 Rawalpindi-IV.
He was re-elected for a third time in the 1997 Pakistani general election from the same area, NA-54 Rawalpindi-IV, as a PML(N) candidate. After this election, he became the Federal Minister for Labour, Manpower, and Overseas Pakistanis. He held this position from 1997 to 1999. His time as minister ended when Nawaz Sharif's government was removed from power in 1999 by General Pervez Musharraf.
Leading PML(Z): 2002–Present
After some disagreements with Nawaz Sharif, Ijaz-ul-Haq started his own political party in 2002. He named it the Pakistan Muslim League (Z) (PML(Z)).
He was elected to the National Assembly for the fourth time in the 2002 Pakistani general election. He won from NA-191 Bahawalnagar-IV as a PML(Z) candidate.
He then worked with another party, the Pakistan Muslim League (Q) (PML(Q)). Because of this alliance, he was appointed as the Federal Minister for Religious Affairs and the Federal Minister for Minorities.
In the 2008 Pakistani general election, he ran from NA-191 Bahawalnagar-IV as a PML(Q) candidate but did not win. After this election, he left the PML(Q) in 2008.
In 2013, he formed an alliance with the PML(N) for the elections, though he did not officially join their party.
Ijaz-ul-Haq ran for two National Assembly seats as a PML(Z) candidate in the 2013 Pakistani general election. He won one seat, NA-191 Bahawalnagar-IV, but lost the other, NA-190 Bahawalnagar-III.
He ran again in the 2018 Pakistani general election from NA-169 Bahawalnagar-IV as a PML(Z) candidate. He did not win this election.
Recent Political Activities
In March 2023, there were reports that his party, PML(Z), might join the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. However, in May 2023, he stated that these reports were not true and that PML(Z) would not merge with PTI.
He was re-elected to the National Assembly from NA-163 Bahawalnagar-IV in the 2024 Pakistani general election. He ran as a PML(Z) candidate and won the seat.

Ijaz-ul-Haq has also written articles for various Urdu newspapers and publications. These include Daily Jang and Dunya News.
