Muḥammad bin al-Ḥasan bin Muḥammad bin al-Karīm al-Baghdadi, often called al-Baghdadi, was a famous writer from the past. He lived a long time ago and passed away in 1239 AD. Al-Baghdadi put together one of the first Arabic cookbooks. This book was written during the time of the Abbasid Empire. Its name was Kitab al-Ṭabīḫ, which means The Book of Dishes. When it was first written in 1226, it had 160 recipes. Later, 260 more recipes were added to it.

Al-Baghdadi's Cookbook: A Special Find

There is only one original copy of Al-Baghdadi's cookbook left. You can find it in the Süleymaniye Library in Istanbul, Turkey. A food writer named Charles Perry said that this book was a favorite for hundreds of years. People in Turkey loved using it.

Turkish Versions of the Cookbook

Over time, people in Turkey added more recipes to the original book. They also gave it a new name: Kitâbü’l-Vasfi’l-Et‘ime el-Mu‘tâde. Two copies of this updated book are kept at the Topkapı Palace Library.

Later, a doctor named Muhammad ibn Mahmud al-Shirwani made a Turkish translation of the book. He worked for a ruler named Murad II. This doctor added about 70 new recipes that were popular at the time.

Modern Editions of the Book

The Turkish translation by al-Shirwani was published in modern Turkish in 2005. This made it easy for people today to read. Also, a modern Turkish translation of Al-Baghdadi's original book came out in 2009. Charles Perry helped to edit this version.
