Bush muhly (scientific name: Muhlenbergia porteri) is a type of grass. It is also known as Porter's muhly.

Where Bush Muhly Lives

This special bunchgrass grows naturally in southwestern North America. You can find it in many places across the Southwestern United States, like the Great Basin and the California deserts.

It also grows in northern Mexico, including the Baja California Peninsula, the northern Mexican Plateau, and the Chihuahuan Desert.

Bush muhly likes to grow in rocky and shrubby areas. It can be found at elevations from about 2,000 to 5,500 feet (610 to 1,680 meters) above sea level. It often grows in places with shadscale scrub plants or Joshua Trees.

What Bush Muhly Looks Like

Muhlenbergia porteri is a bunchgrass, which means it grows in clumps and comes back every year. It has thin, tangled stems that can grow up to about 31 inches (80 centimeters) tall.

The plant's flowers grow in an open, airy cluster called an inflorescence. These flower parts have very thin branches with tiny seeds. These seeds have small, bristle-like parts called awns. Bush muhly usually blooms in May and June.

This grass was named after a person named Thomas Conrad Porter.
