History of Mulino
The name "Mulino" comes from a flour mill built in 1851. At that time, the area was known as "Howards Mill." The word "Mulino" is a changed version of the Spanish word molino, which means "mill." Postal workers chose this name because "Molino" sounded too much like the nearby town of Molalla. The Mulino post office opened in 1882.
Howard's Gristmill Today
The original mill building still stands today. It has been changed into a private home. A special plaque from the National Register of Historic Places says it is the oldest industrial building still standing in Oregon. It is also the oldest building to be used continuously as a local post office. The mill, known as Howard's Gristmill, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1981. This means it is an important historical site.
