Mumm-Ra in the 1985 Series
When the creators were making the show, they needed a name for the main villain. Someone suggested "Mummia Raa," which means "A Bad Mummy" in Hebrew. They shortened it to Mumm-Ra.
Mumm-Ra calls himself the "ever-living source of evil" on Third Earth. He has strong magic powers and can live forever. He is actually a servant to the Ancient Spirits of Evil. These spirits are shown as four statues: a boar, a crocodile, a vulture, and an ox. They give Mumm-Ra his powers and immortality. This helps him spread their dark influence across Third Earth.
Mumm-Ra lives in a place called the Black Pyramid. Inside, he usually looks like a weak, old mummy. To get his power back, he must go into a stone coffin called a sarcophagus. But he can also become much stronger and more muscular. He does this by saying a special chant: "Ancient Spirits of Evil, transform this decayed form to Mumm-Ra, the Ever-Living!"
When he is in his "Ever-Living" form, Mumm-Ra's magic becomes very strong. He can cast spells and shoot energy bolts. He uses these powers to fight the ThunderCats. He can also change his shape to trick his enemies.
Mumm-Ra seems almost impossible to defeat in his strong form. But he has one big weakness: if he sees his own ugly reflection, he loses his power. This forces him to go back to his weak mummy form and return to the Black Pyramid. However, in later episodes, the Ancient Spirits of Evil helped him overcome this weakness. Mumm-Ra is very good at tricking people. He will do anything to fight against good.
He often uses his magic to create disguises and fool the ThunderCats. For example, he pretended to be a Diamondfly, Gregory Gregion, Silky, The Netherwitch, and even Pumm-Ra. He once even took the form of King Arthur to get the famous magic sword Excalibur. He used it to fight against the ThunderCats' Sword of Omens.
Sometimes, Mumm-Ra can become even more powerful than "Mumm-Ra the Ever-Living." This form is called "Mumm-Ra the All-Powerful." In this state, he takes all the power from the Ancient Spirits of Evil. He becomes much bigger and stronger. His voice also changes. This super-powerful form only appeared a few times in the series. In another special form, he called himself "Mumm-Ra the Dream Master." He would enter the ThunderCats' dreams to try and control their minds.
Mumm-Ra is considered immortal. When he is defeated, he simply goes back to his sarcophagus. He cannot truly be killed. Even if his body is destroyed, he will always come back. He often says, "Wherever evil exists, Mumm-Ra lives!"
Later in the series, Mumm-Ra gets a blue, undead, bulldog-like pet named Ma-Mutt. Ma-Mutt can fly and has amazing strength and speed. He is usually evil, but sometimes he shows a softer side. Ma-Mutt is the only creature Mumm-Ra seems to care about. In one episode, after his evil machine was destroyed, Mumm-Ra frantically looked for Ma-Mutt. When he found him, he even apologized for being mean.
The Ancient Spirits of Evil sometimes got tired of Mumm-Ra's failures. They once told him to destroy the ThunderCats or be sent away from Third Earth. When he failed, they trapped him in a crystal and sent him far into space. But when the ThunderCats built a new home on New Thundera, the Spirits freed Mumm-Ra. They rebuilt his cauldron on Third Earth so he could continue his evil plans.
Mumm-Ra in the 2011 Series
In the 2011 version of ThunderCats, Mumm-Ra is also an Ancient Spirit of Evil. He still works for the main Ancient Spirits of Evil. In this version, his "Ever-Living" form has demon wings and a larger body. He also has a new weakness: very bright light. His biggest goal is to take over the entire universe and make everyone follow his rules.
When Mumm-Ra uses a special item called the Gauntlet of Plun-Darr, his power grows even more. He gains a new armored form, which is like his "All-Powerful" form from the older series. This form has a skeletal mask and an Egyptian headdress. In his "Ever-Living" form, he also shows traits of a leaf-nosed vampire bat.
Many centuries before the new series, Mumm-Ra used advanced technology and magic. He enslaved the ancestors of the ThunderCats and other animal races. He wanted to collect four special Powerstones (the War Stone, Tech Stone, Spirit Stone, and Soul Stone). He planned to put them on the Sword of Plun-Darr. This sword was made from a star he had destroyed, which also destroyed an entire galaxy!
However, a ThunderCat named Leo led a rebellion with the help of the Animals. Leo managed to take the War Stone (which later became the Eye of Thundera). He defeated Mumm-Ra and took the other Powerstones. Mumm-Ra's pyramid spaceship crashed on Third Earth. Mumm-Ra went into his tomb to wait for everyone else to die in the crash. But the controls were broken, and Mumm-Ra was trapped in his pyramid. The Powerstones and the survivors spread out across Third Earth.
Many centuries later, Mumm-Ra used a character named Grune to get out of his prison. He then planned the downfall of Thundera. With Grune and Slythe, Mumm-Ra wanted to get the Eye of Thundera back. He also wanted to find the other three Powerstones to complete the Sword of Plun-Darr. Mumm-Ra even brought Pumyra back to life to serve him. He placed her among the Thunderian slaves as a spy.
After Grune got trapped, Mumm-Ra had Slithe recruit other bad guys like Addicus and Kaynar. This helped him control the Lizard army and get more soldiers. Later, Mumm-Ra used Pumyra to get the Sword of Plun-Darr back. He also got the Tech Stone and found a new ally in Vultaire. If the series had continued, it would have shown Mumm-Ra searching for the last Powerstone, the Soul Stone.
Mumm-Ra in ThunderCats Roar
In the ThunderCats Roar series, Mumm-Ra is similar to his 1985 version. He first appears in his "Ever-Living" form. He uses a special staff called the Doomstaff. He also put a curse on Third Earth: anyone who said his name (except him) would be struck by lightning! But the ThunderCats destroyed his staff. This forced him back into his weaker mummy form, and he swore revenge.
Mumm-Ra's Powers and Abilities
Mumm-Ra is an amazing master of magic. He knows almost everything about mystical arts from all over the universe. He can use his magic for almost anything he wants. His powers include:
- Controlling energy
- Floating in the air (levitation)
- Bringing the dead back to life (necromancy)
- Making potions and changing things (alchemy)
- Changing his shape (shapeshifting)
- Traveling through time
- Moving from one place to another instantly (teleportation)
- Moving objects with his mind (psychokinesis)
- Changing things into other things (transfiguration)
- Controlling other people's minds
- Sending his spirit out of his body (astral projection)
- Seeing things far away or in the future (scrying)
- Summoning monsters
When Mumm-Ra is in his "Ever-Living" form, he becomes a channel for the Ancient Spirits of Evil. This means he can make his powers even stronger, almost to a cosmic level. He also gains super strength and stays undead no matter how much time passes or how badly he is hurt.
However, this great power has a cost: his energy runs out quickly. Once Mumm-Ra the Ever-Living uses too much power, he must change back into his mummy form. He then has to go into his sarcophagus to rest and get his energy back. Also, Mumm-Ra's power in his Ever-Living form is connected to his sarcophagus and the four statues of the Ancient Spirits in his pyramid. If any of them are damaged or destroyed, his power gets much weaker right away.
In the 2011 show, Mumm-Ra's Ever-Living form also makes his magic powers much stronger. It doesn't seem to have a time limit for how long he can stay in this form. Once he gets the Gauntlet of Plun-Darr (which is like Lion-O's gauntlet), he can use a special double-edged sword. He can use the gauntlet in his Ever-Living form to become his "All-Powerful" form. This makes him even stronger, and his sword changes into a dual-bladed scimitar. But he can only reach this form if he has two or more of the Powerstones. If the Powerstones are taken from his gauntlet while he is in his All-Powerful form, Mumm-Ra changes back to his skinny, mummy self.
