ThunderCats is a popular American media franchise. It features a group of fictional cat-like humanoid aliens. These characters were created by Tobin "Ted" Wolf.
The ThunderCats first appeared in an animated television series. This show ran from 1985 to 1989. A Japanese studio called Pacific Animation Corporation animated it. Rankin-Bass Animated Entertainment helped produce the series.

The first ThunderCats TV show was animated in Japan. But it was produced, written, and voice-acted in the United States.
The company Rankin-Bass Productions first distributed the show. Later, Warner Bros. bought the rights to ThunderCats in 1989. Warner Bros. has owned the series ever since.

ThunderCats Comic Books
Several comic book series have been made. The first ThunderCats comic book series came out in 1985. It was published by Marvel Comics through its Star Comics brand. This series lasted for three years.
Later, in 2002, Wildstorm Productions started publishing new ThunderCats comics. Wildstorm is part of DC Comics. In 2012, Panini Comics released a new series in the United Kingdom. This series was connected to the 2011 TV show.
ThunderCats Video Games
A side-scrolling video game based on the series was released in 1987. It was called ThunderCats: The Lost Eye of Thundera.

There have been plans for a ThunderCats movie.
Animated Film Plans
In 2007, there was news about a CGI animated ThunderCats movie. It was planned to be released in 2010. However, the movie was never made. Some concept art and test footage from this planned film were later shared online.
Live-Action Movie Plans
In 2021, Warner Bros. announced new plans. They are actively working on a live-action ThunderCats film. Adam Wingard is set to direct the movie.

ThunderCats (2011 TV series)
A second ThunderCats TV series started in 2011. It was planned for 52 episodes. But it was shortened to 26 episodes and then cancelled. Later, it was shown again on Adult Swim's Toonami block.
ThunderCats Roar (2020 TV series)
A third ThunderCats cartoon, ThunderCats Roar, premiered in 2020. Victor Courtright and Marly Halpern-Graser developed this show.
ThunderCats Roar has a very cartoonish art style. It also has a more lighthearted and funny tone. The story is similar to the original. The ThunderCats escape their dying planet, Thundera. They crash-land on Third Earth. There, they fight different villains and their evil leader, Mumm-Ra. However, this show was cancelled after only one season.
