The Mundo River is a beautiful river located in southeastern Spain. It begins its journey slightly south of a town called Riópar. Its source is in a mountain area known as the Calar del Mundo.

From its starting point, the Mundo River flows towards Riópar. After that, it turns west. Eventually, it joins another important river, the Segura River, south of the town of Hellín.

About the Mundo River

The Mundo River stretches for about 150 kilometers (93 miles). The area of land that drains water into the river, called its drainage basin, covers 766 square kilometers (296 square miles). This means a large amount of land contributes water to the Mundo River.

River's Path and Water Sources

The Mundo River gets most of its smaller rivers, called tributaries, in its upper part. These include the Rio de la Vega, the Rio de los Vadillos, and the Rio de Bogarra. Further downstream, the Arroyo de Tobarra is the only other important tributary that adds water to the Mundo.

There are two large reservoirs along the river's path. These are like big lakes created by dams to store water. The first is the Talave reservoir, which can hold 34 cubic hectometres of water. The second is the Camarillas reservoir, holding 36.5 cubic hectometres.

The Talave reservoir also receives extra water. This water comes from the Tagus River through a very long aqueduct, which is like a giant water pipe, about 250 kilometers (155 miles) long. This helps ensure there's enough water in the Mundo River system.

The Amazing Source of the Mundo River

The Mundo River is famous for its incredible source, which is often called the Reventón del Río Mundo. Many people consider it one of the most beautiful river sources in the world.

The river actually bursts out from a large cave located in the middle of a very tall cliff. As the water emerges, it forms a stunning waterfall that drops almost 100 meters (328 feet) down. After this main waterfall, the water continues to flow, creating a series of smaller waterfalls and clear pools.

The cave itself is quite impressive. It is about 15 meters (49 feet) wide and 25 meters (82 feet) high. This cave is actually the end of a much larger system of caves that lies hidden beneath the Calar del Mundo mountain plateau.
