Muragan facts for kids
Muragan is an important ancestral figure from the Indigenous Australian people in North-Eastern Australia. This figure is believed to be a spirit ancestor or a significant person from the past. People who honored Muragan might have spoken the Kunjen language or a similar dialect.
Interestingly, some believe that the Australian Muragan is connected to the Tamil-Indian deity named Murugan. It is also thought that "Muragan" was the name of a real group of people who lived in the state of Queensland.
Where Did the Muragan People Live?
The Muragan people lived in the area around the middle Mitchell River and further north towards the Alice River. They were also found near the New Koolatah Station.
According to Norman Tindale, a well-known researcher, the Muragan people had a large area of land, about 1,000 square miles (2,600 km2) (which is about 2,600 square kilometers). This shows they had a significant presence in that part of Queensland.
