The Mureș River is a long and important river in Eastern Europe. It flows for about 789-kilometre-long (490 mi), which is like driving from New York City to Cleveland, Ohio! Its drainage basin (the area of land where all the water flows into the river) covers a huge area of 30,332 km2 (11,711 sq mi).
The Mureș starts high up in the Carpathian Mountains in Romania. It then travels across Romania and into Hungary, where it finally joins another big river called the Tisza near the city of Szeged. In Romania, the Mureș is about 761 km (473 mi) long.
This river is very important for the areas it flows through. In the past, people even used it to transport salt on large rafts!

Where the Mureș River Flows
The Mureș River travels through several regions and counties. In Romania, it crosses Harghita, Mureș, Alba, Hunedoara, Arad, and Timiș. After that, it enters Hungary and flows through Csongrád.
Major Cities Along the Mureș
Many important cities and towns are located along the Mureș River. Some of the biggest cities in Romania that the river passes through include Târgu Mureș, Alba Iulia, Deva, and Arad. In Hungary, the city of Makó is on its banks.
Protected Areas in Hungary
A part of the Mureș River in Hungary, about 73 km (45 mi) long, is protected. This area is part of the Körös-Maros National Park. It includes special places like gallery forests (forests along the river), floodplain meadows, and a forest reserve near Szeged. These areas help protect the plants and animals that live there.
The River's Ancient Names
The Mureș River has been known by different names throughout history. It was first mentioned way back in 484 BC by a Greek historian named Herodotus. He called it Maris. Later, another ancient writer, Strabo, called it Marisos.
In Latin, the river was known as the Marisus. A document from 948 AD by the Byzantine Emperor Constantine VII called it Moreses. Over time, it also had German names like Mieresch and Marosch, and Turkish names like Maroş or Muriş.
Rivers Joining the Mureș
Many smaller rivers and streams flow into the Mureș River. These are called tributaries. They add water to the Mureș as it travels towards the Tisza River.
Some of the important rivers that join the Mureș from its left side include the Târnava, Sebeș, and Strei. From its right side, the Arieș River is a notable tributary. There are many other smaller tributaries that contribute to the Mureș's flow.
