Muriel E. Mussells Seyfert (born Muriel Elizabeth Mussells, 3 February 1909 – 9 November 1997) was an American astronomer. She is best known for finding special "ring nebulae" in our Milky Way galaxy. She made this discovery in 1936 while working at the Harvard College Observatory.
Early Life
Muriel Elizabeth Mussells was born on February 3, 1909. Her hometown was Danvers, Massachusetts. Her parents were George and Stella Mussells.
Discoveries in Space
Muriel Mussells Seyfert worked at the Harvard College Observatory. She was part of a group called the Harvard Computers. These were women who did complex math calculations by hand. They helped astronomers understand the stars and galaxies.
Muriel is most famous for finding new "ring nebulae." These are also known as planetary nebulae. They are beautiful, glowing clouds of gas and dust in space. They look like rings or bubbles. She found these amazing objects in the Milky Way galaxy.
Family Life
On May 20, 1935, Muriel married Carl Keenan Seyfert. Carl was also a famous astronomer. The special galaxies called Seyfert galaxies are named after him. So is a group of galaxies known as the Seyfert's Sextet. Muriel and Carl had two children together.
Muriel's sister was Sylvia Mussells Lindsay. Sylvia was married to another astronomer, Eric Mervyn Lindsay.
