Murphy Wiredu, born on January 15, 1985, is a former Canadian soccer player. He played as a forward. Wiredu competed in several professional soccer leagues. These included the USL Premier Development League, the Canadian Soccer League, and the S.League.
Playing Career
Early Years and College Soccer
Murphy Wiredu started playing soccer in high school. He attended Monsignor Johnson Catholic High School in North York. There, he was the captain of his soccer team. He also earned an award for being the most valuable player in volleyball.
In his youth, he played for a team called CS Azzurri Hearts. In 2004, he received a scholarship. This allowed him to play soccer for Saint Peter's College in Jersey City, New Jersey.
During his first year at college, he led the MAAC conference in goals. He scored nine goals that season. He was also named to the conference's All-Rookie team. In 2006, he was the second-highest scorer for Saint Peter's. He scored 9 goals and made 3 assists.
In his final year at Saint Peter's College (2007–2008), Wiredu was the captain of his team. They reached the conference finals but lost to Loyola. They also made it to the NCAA Tournament. There, they lost to the University of Virginia in the first round. He finished his senior year leading the MAAC again with 14 goals. This earned him the MAAC Offensive Player of the Year award. He also received MAAC 1st team honors.
Professional Club Play
After his college soccer season ended, Murphy Wiredu joined the Ottawa Fury. This team played in the Premier Development League. He played in five games for them and scored two goals.
In 2007, he signed with the Toronto Lynx. In his first season with the Lynx, he scored 10 goals. These goals came in the team’s last nine games. He was given the club's Best Offensive Player award. This was because he was the team's top goal scorer. He helped the Lynx finish the season with a good record. They were only 6 points away from making the playoffs.
The next year, in 2008, he joined Italia Shooters. They played in the Canadian Soccer League. On October 5, 2008, he scored three goals in one game. This is called a hat trick. It happened against the defending champions, Toronto Croatia. The Shooters won that game 6-1. This victory helped them win the International Division title.
In the playoffs, he helped the Shooters reach the semifinals. However, they were defeated by Serbian White Eagles. The White Eagles later became the champions. In 2009, Murphy Wiredu moved to Singapore. He played for Sengkang Punggol FC in the S.League. He was released from his contract in July 2010.
