The traditional lands of the Muruwari people are very large. They cover about 16,300 square kilometres (6,300 square miles). These lands are mostly around Barringun, right on the border between Queensland and New South Wales.

The Muruwari country stretches north to places like Mulga Downs and Weela in Queensland. It also includes Enngonia along the Warrego River. Other important places are Brenda and Weilmoringle on the Culgoa River. The lands also go south near Collerina.

History of Contact with Settlers

In 1846, an explorer named Thomas Mitchell explored the Muruwari area. He was looking for a path to the Gulf of Carpentaria. He had a Wiradjuri guide named Yuranigh who helped him.

Around the same time, in 1845, Mitchell's son Roderick heard about good grazing land. He started mapping the area. By 1850, new rules allowed settlers to lease large areas of land. This led to conflicts over land use.

Many Muruwari people began working on the new stations. They would work there but also take time off for important cultural duties. One station, Tatala, was known for good relations between the Muruwari people and the manager, Frederick Wherritt. In 1861, during a big flood, the local Muruwari people even helped save hundreds of sheep by moving them to high ground.
