The Dolores Olmedo Museum is a special art museum located in Mexico City. It was created from the amazing art collection of a Mexican businesswoman named Dolores Olmedo. This museum is famous for having the largest collections of artworks by Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. In 2024, the museum's collection moved to a new home in Chapultepec.

History of the Museum

How the Museum Started

In 1962, Dolores Olmedo bought a large property in La Noria, Xochimilco, which is in the southern part of Mexico City. She later decided to turn this beautiful place into a museum. The museum, named after her, first opened its doors in 1994.

Dolores Olmedo's Gift

Dolores Olmedo gave her entire art collection to the museum. This collection includes many different types of art. You can see pre-Hispanic art (from before the Spanish arrived), colonial art, and folk art. There are also modern and contemporary pieces. When Dolores Olmedo passed away in 2002, she left money to help take care of the museum. This made sure it could stay open for everyone to visit.

What You Can See at the Museum

Art Collections

The museum is made up of five buildings. Inside, you can find about 170 paintings. A big part of this collection, 145 paintings, are by Diego Rivera. There are also 25 paintings by his wife, Frida Kahlo. You can even see some of their writings and drawings. The museum also has nearly 6,000 small statues and sculptures from ancient times.

Living Animals in the Gardens

The museum is not just about art! Its beautiful gardens are home to many different animals. You can see geese and ducks wandering around. There are also six special Xoloitzcuintle dogs. These dogs are a very old breed from Mexico. You might also spot colorful Indian peafowls (peacocks) in the gardens.

New Areas to Explore

Dolores Olmedo's Private Rooms

Recently, new parts of the museum have opened to the public. These are "her private rooms." Here, you can see the original decorations from Dolores Olmedo's own house. This includes beautiful ivory and china pieces. You can also see artwork by artists she supported later in her life. These artists include José Juárez and Francisco Guevara.

Angelina Beloff's Art

The museum now has a special permanent exhibition. It features works by the Russian-Mexican artist Angelina Beloff. She was Diego Rivera's first wife. This exhibition lets visitors learn more about her art.
