The Dolores Olmedo Museum is a special art museum located in Xochimilco, a beautiful area of Mexico City. It was created from the amazing art collection of a Mexican businesswoman named Dolores Olmedo. Soon, in 2024, the museum will move to a new home in Chapultepec.

A Museum's Beginning

In 1962, Dolores Olmedo bought a large property in La Noria, Xochimilco, in southern Mexico City. She later turned this property into the museum that carries her name in 1994.

Dolores Olmedo's Vision

Dolores Olmedo gave her entire art collection to the museum. This collection includes many different types of art. You can see pre-Hispanic art from ancient times. There is also colonial art, folk art, and modern art.

Famous Artists' Works

The Dolores Olmedo Museum has the largest collection of artworks by Frida Kahlo. It also holds many pieces by Diego Rivera, who was Frida's husband. You can also find art by Angelina Beloff here. When Dolores Olmedo passed away in 2002, she made sure there was money to keep her museum running. It is now open for everyone to visit.

What You Can See at the Museum

The museum is made up of five buildings. Inside, you can find around 170 paintings. This includes 145 paintings by Diego Rivera and 25 by his wife, Frida Kahlo. You can also see some of their writings and drawings.

Ancient Treasures

The museum also has nearly 6,000 ancient figurines and sculptures. These are from the time before the Spanish arrived in Mexico. They show the rich history and art of early Mexican cultures.

Living Animals in the Gardens

The museum is not just about art! Its beautiful gardens are home to many living animals. You can see geese and ducks wandering around. There are also six special Xoloitzcuintles. These are a unique breed of dog from Mexico. You might even spot some colorful Indian peafowls.

New Areas to Explore

Recently, new parts of the museum have opened up. These are called "her private rooms." They show how Dolores Olmedo lived. You can see original decorations from her house. This includes items made of ivory and fine china.

Honoring Other Artists

These rooms also feature artwork by artists she supported later in her life. These artists include José Juárez and Francisco Guevara. The museum now has a special permanent exhibit. It shows the works of Russian-Mexican artist Angelina Beloff. She was Diego Rivera's first wife.
