History of the Museum

Have you ever wondered how a museum gets started? For the Museum of Carpet, it began with a group called the Carpet Museum Trust. This trust was created in 1981. Their main goal was to open a public museum.

Why a Carpet Museum?

Kidderminster was once very famous for making carpets. It was a huge industry there! But over time, the carpet-making business started to get smaller. The Carpet Museum Trust wanted to save important items from this industry. They collected old machines, tools, documents, and books from different carpet companies in Kidderminster. This way, the history wouldn't be lost.

Opening Day

After many years of hard work, the Museum of Carpet finally opened its doors to the public! This exciting day was on 20 October 2012. A special guest, Lord Cobham, who supported the museum, officially opened it.
