What is MODA?
MODA helps people understand how design affects their everyday lives. It does this through special shows, learning programs for students, and activities for adults. The museum often features exciting exhibitions about many types of design.
You can learn about architecture (how buildings are made). You can also explore industrial design (like how products are created). Other topics include furniture, graphics, and even fashion. MODA is located on Peachtree Street in Midtown Atlanta, right across from the High Museum of Art.
MODA's Story: How it Started
MODA first opened its doors in 1989. Back then, it was called the Atlanta International Museum of Art & Design. It was located in the Peachtree Center area of Downtown Atlanta.
In 2003, the museum changed its focus. It decided to become a design museum and changed its name to MODA. After this, it had many popular exhibits. These shows featured famous designers and cool topics like Japanese architecture.
In 2011, MODA moved to its current spot in Midtown Atlanta. This new location is at the corner of 16th Street and Peachtree Street. The museum is on the ground floor of a building that was updated by the company Perkins+Will. MODA uses about 9,000 square feet (836 square meters) of space there.
In early 2013, Laura Flusche became the new executive director of MODA. She helps lead the museum's activities and vision.
Cool Exhibitions at MODA
MODA always has interesting exhibitions that show how design is all around us. The very first show at its new Midtown location was called Passione Italiana: Design of the Italian Motorcycle. This exhibit displayed many cool Italian motorcycles. It showed designs from the last 50 years.
Other past exhibitions have explored different areas of design. One show looked at the history of bathroom design. Another featured a collection of international posters about AIDS.
In 2012, MODA had an exhibit called Skate It or Hang It!? The Evolution of Skateboard Art. This show looked at the amazing artwork on skateboards. It explored how skateboard graphics have changed over time. The exhibition was popular with skateboarders, artists, and young people in Atlanta.
MODA also features exhibits on many other topics. These include game design, the work of famous architects like Eero Saarinen, and designers like Paul Rand. They also show how everyday things are designed and how design can help solve social problems.
Inside MODA: The Exhibition Space
MODA has about 6,500 square feet (604 square meters) of space for its exhibitions. This space is divided into two main galleries. The galleries have a modern, industrial look with concrete floors.
The front area can also be used for events and gatherings. The back gallery has a high, vaulted ceiling with tall windows. The museum has a built-in sound and video system. It also has special lighting that can turn on when people are nearby.
