Mutassim Billah Gaddafi (Arabic: المُعْتَصِمٌ بِٱللهِ ٱلْقَذَّافِيّ; 18 December 1974 – 20 October 2011) was an officer in the Libyan Army. He also served as the National Security Advisor of Libya from 2008 to 2011. He was the fourth son of Muammar Gaddafi, who was the leader of Libya at the time. Mutassim was an important part of his father's closest group of advisors. His mother was Safia Farkash. He was captured during the Battle of Sirte and passed away on October 20, 2011.

Mutassim Gaddafi's Role in Libyan Politics
Mutassim Gaddafi played a part in Libya's government and military. He held a key position as the National Security Advisor. This role meant he advised the government on important safety and defense matters for the country.
Meetings with the United States
In April 2009, Mutassim Gaddafi met with Hillary Clinton, who was the U.S. Secretary of State. This was a very important meeting between the two countries. It showed that Mutassim had a significant role in Libya's government.
He also met with U.S. Senators John McCain and Joseph Lieberman in 2009. During these meetings, he talked about Libya's need for military support. He explained that Libya was surrounded by many people in neighboring countries and faced challenges from different regions. He wanted to buy military equipment from the United States, even though he could also get it from countries like Russia and China.
His Place in the Family and Government
Mutassim Gaddafi lived in Egypt for some years. After returning to Libya, he became the National Security Advisor. This was a high-ranking job. He worked to create a special military unit.
During the Libyan Civil War in 2011, Mutassim Gaddafi was in charge of military units in the Brega area. He led forces during battles in that region. He was also involved in the defense of Sirte, which was his father's hometown. However, the loyalist forces he commanded were not successful in defending the city.
Mutassim Gaddafi's Passing
Mutassim Gaddafi was captured when the city of Sirte fell on October 20, 2011. Reports from officials said he was captured while trying to leave the city.
After his capture, there were videos and photos released. These showed that he was injured. Later images showed him deceased in a hospital. He was not buried right away, which is different from usual Islamic traditions.
