What is Mutton Hunk Fen?
Mutton Hunk Fen is a type of wetland called a "fen." Fens are like swamps or marshes, but they get their water from underground springs. This makes them different from bogs, which get water mostly from rain.
Where is Mutton Hunk Fen Located?
This preserve is found in Accomack County, Virginia. It is right next to the Atlantic Ocean's Gargathy Bay on its eastern side. To the north, it is bordered by Whites Creek and Mutton Hunk Branch.
Why is Mutton Hunk Fen Special?
Even though Mutton Hunk Fen is very close to the ocean's saltwater, it has many freshwater plants. This happens because freshwater springs flow into the area. These springs keep the water fresh enough for these plants to grow.
The soil here is also quite acidic. This unusual mix of freshwater and acidic conditions allows plants that normally grow in bogs to thrive. You can also find plants that grow in tidal freshwater wetlands. Five types of plants found here are very rare in the region.
