My First Alphabet is a special educational video game made for Atari 8-bit computers. It was created by Fernando Herrera and released in 1981 by the Atari Program Exchange. This game was very important because it won the first-ever Atari Star Award. This award recognized the best new programs submitted to APX. Because it was so good, Atari Inc. started selling it directly. Winning this award also helped Fernando Herrera start his own company, First Star Software, and create many more games.

How My First Alphabet Was Made

Pressing the A key displays things that start with that letter.

Fernando Herrera created My First Alphabet for a very personal reason. His son, Steve, was born with a serious eye condition called cataracts. Doctors thought Steve might be blind.

Mr. Herrera did not want his son to be placed in special classes. Instead, he decided to help Steve learn the alphabet himself. He wrote a computer program to do this. After several months, his son made amazing progress. He learned to read and overcame his vision challenges. This special program later became the game My First Alphabet.
