My Heart Would Know is a famous song by Hank Williams. He wrote and sang it himself. This song came out in June 1951. It was the B-side to his hit song "Hey Good Lookin'". Both songs were released by MGM Records.
Making the Song
Hank Williams recorded "My Heart Would Know" on March 16, 1951. This happened at Castle Studio in Nashville. Fred Rose was the producer. He helped make sure the song sounded great.
Hank was joined by his band, the Drifting Cowboys. The band members included Jerry Rivers on fiddle and Don Helms on steel guitar. Sammy Pruett played electric guitar, and Jack Shook played rhythm guitar. Ernie Newton or Howard Watts (also known as "Cedric Rainwater") played bass. Either Owen Bradley or Fred Rose played piano.
The song is about someone who is still deeply in love with a person who no longer loves them back. Another song recorded at the same time, "I Can't Help It (If I'm Still in Love with You)", has a similar theme.
A special part of the song is the high-pitched sound from the steel guitar played by Don Helms. This sound became a key part of Hank Williams' music. Fred Rose gave Don Helms a simple rule for playing with Hank. He told Don, "When Hank sings low, you play high. When Hank sings high, you play low." This made sure the steel guitar always sounded different from Hank's voice.
"My Heart Would Know" became very popular because it was on the same record as "Hey Good Lookin'". "Hey Good Lookin'" was a huge success for Hank Williams. It became his sixth song to reach #1 on the country music charts.
Later, the song was even featured in the Disney-Pixar movie Cars.
