Myechyslaw Ivanavich Hryb (born 25 September 1938) is a politician from Belarus. He was the leader of Belarus from January 1994 to July 1994. During this time, he was called the Chairman of the Supreme Soviet. He helped create the first Constitution of Belarus. After July 1994, a new role called the President of Belarus was created. Alexander Lukashenko became the first President. Myechyslaw Hryb continued to work in parliament as a speaker. Today, he is part of the opposition, which means he is against the current government. He is a member of the Social-Democratic Party.
Early Life and Police Work
Myechyslaw Hryb was born on September 25, 1938. He grew up in a village called Sawicze. This area was part of Poland at the time. His family were farmers. When he was young, World War II started, and his father passed away.
He went to school in Dyatlovo. From the seventh grade, he started working. He dug peat and helped at construction sites.
In 1959, he finished his studies at Lviv State University. When he returned to Belarus, he worked as a fire inspector. He became very interested in how fires start. He then studied law at Belarusian State University. He worked as a police inspector in the Vitebsk Region. From 1962 to 1981, he held many different jobs in law enforcement in Vitebsk.
In 1981, he became a leader in the police force. Four years later, in 1985, he was promoted again. He became the Head of the Department of Internal Affairs for the Vitebsk Region.
Leading Belarus
In 1990, Myechyslaw Hryb was elected to parliament. This was called the Supreme Soviet. He joined a group of politicians who wanted to build democracy in Belarus.
In parliament, Hryb led a special group. This group focused on national security, defense, and fighting crime. He supported Belarus joining a security group with other countries. This group was called the Collective Security Treaty.
On April 15, 1994, Hryb signed an important agreement. It was about creating a free trade area. This agreement helps Belarus trade with countries like Azerbaijan and Georgia today.
In Opposition
In October 2020, Myechyslaw Hryb took on a new role. An opposition leader named Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya asked him to lead a special group. This group's job is to suggest changes to the Constitution of Belarus. These changes would help make Belarus more democratic. However, the current government does not recognize this group.
Personal Life
Myechyslaw Hryb is Catholic. He is married and has two children. His son is a doctor, and his daughter is a lawyer. He also has a grandson. He mainly speaks Russian, but he learned Belarusian later in his life.
