Vyacheslav Frantsevich Kebich (Belarusian: Вячаслаў Францавіч Кебіч, romanized: Vjačaslaŭ Francavič Kjebič [vʲatʂaˈslaw kˈʲɛbʲitʂ], Russian: Вячесла́в Фра́нцевич Ке́бич) was an important politician from Belarus. He was the very first Prime Minister of Belarus, serving in this role from 1991 to 1994.
Early Life and Education
Vyacheslav Kebich was born on June 10, 1936. His birthplace was a village called Konyushevshchina, which is now in the Minsk region of Belarus. He was a smart student and graduated from the engineering department of the Belarusian Polytechnic Institute in 1958. Before he started his career in politics, Kebich worked as an engineer.
Prime Minister of Belarus
Vyacheslav Kebich became the first Prime Minister of Belarus. He held this important job from 1991 until 1994. Before Belarus became an independent country, he had a similar role in the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic starting in 1990.
During his time as Prime Minister, Kebich strongly believed that Belarus should have close ties with Russia. He often spoke about how the two countries shared a common history and similar cultures. He worked to make their economies closer, even suggesting that they should have a single currency, like a money union.
Other Important Roles
Kebich played a big part in history by helping to write and sign the Belavezha Accords. This was a very important agreement that officially ended the Soviet Union and created a new group of countries called the Commonwealth of Independent States.
In 1994, Kebich ran for President of Belarus. He was one of the main candidates in the 1994 Belarusian presidential election, but he lost the election to the current leader, Alexander Lukashenko. After the election, he continued to be involved in public life. He led the Belarusian Commerce and Financial Union and was also a member of the House of Representatives, which is part of the country's parliament.
Death
Vyacheslav Kebich passed away on December 9, 2020. He died from COVID-19 during the COVID-19 pandemic in Belarus. His death happened one day after the 29th anniversary of the Belavezha Accords, the historic agreement he helped to sign.
