Mynydd Llangorse facts for kids
Mynydd Llangorse is a hill in south Wales. It's found on the western side of the Black Mountains. This area is part of the beautiful Brecon Beacons National Park. The hill is in a county called Powys.
It's about two miles east of Llangors village and Llangorse Lake. The town of Talgarth is about five miles to its south. The very top of Mynydd Llangorse is 515 meters (1690 feet) high. It's known as a "Marilyn" because it stands out quite a bit from the land around it.
What the Hill is Made Of (Geology)
The lower parts of Mynydd Llangorse are made of a type of rock called mudstone. This mudstone is from something called the St Maughans Formation.
Higher up the hill, you'll find sandstones and more mudstones. These rocks are part of the Senni Beds Formation. Both of these rock types are from the Old Red Sandstone. This means they were formed a very long time ago, during the Devonian period.
Sometimes, you can also find a thin layer of a rock called calcrete. This rock has been dug up in quarries over the years. Sandstone has also been quarried in different spots on the hill.
How to Explore the Hill (Access)
Mynydd Llangorse is a great place for outdoor activities. It's open country, which means people can freely walk there.
There are many paths that cross the hill. Some are called bridleways, which are also good for horse riders. Other small roads and paths are perfect for mountain bikers too.
A famous walking route called the Beacons Way goes up part of the hill. It climbs a section called Cefn Moel from the village of Bwlch. Then, it goes down into a valley on its way to the small village of Cwmdu. Cwmdu is in the Rhiangoll valley, to the east of the hill.
