Mystik Dan is an amazing American Thoroughbred racehorse. He was born on March 4, 2021. With his jockey, Brian Hernandez Jr., Mystik Dan won the famous 2024 Kentucky Derby. He won by a tiny bit, called a "nose," beating two other great horses, Sierra Leone and Forever Young. His winning time was 2 minutes and 3.34 seconds.

Mystik Dan is a bay colt, which means he is a young male horse with a reddish-brown body and a black mane and tail. He was born in Kentucky, a state famous for horse breeding. His breeders are Lance Gasaway and Daniel Hamby.
His name is a mix of things important to Daniel Hamby. "Dan" comes from his father's first name. "Mystik" comes from his father's first business, called Mystik Tape. Mystik Dan is also a descendant of a very old and important horse named Darley Arabian.

Mystik Dan's mother is a horse named Ma'am. His trainer, Kenneth McPeek, bought Ma'am for the owners. He thought it would be a good idea for Ma'am to have a foal with a horse named Goldencents.
Mystik Dan was born at Magdalena Farm, which is near Lexington, Kentucky. Goldencents is a very successful racehorse himself. He won two big races called Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile races.

Mystik Dan has competed in many races. Here are some of his most important wins and how he did in the Triple Crown races.
Early Races as a Two-Year-Old
When Mystik Dan was two years old, he started his racing career.
- In October 2023, he raced 6.5 furlongs (about 1.3 kilometers) at Keeneland and finished second.
- In November 2023, he won his first race at Churchill Downs. He ran 5.5 furlongs (about 1.1 kilometers) and won by a lot, showing his speed!
Big Races as a Three-Year-Old
As a three-year-old, Mystik Dan competed in some of the biggest races for young horses.
- In February 2024, he won the Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park. This was a Grade III race, and he won by a huge 8 lengths!
- In March 2024, he finished third in the Arkansas Derby, a Grade I race. This showed he could compete with the best horses.

The Kentucky Derby Win
On May 4, 2024, Mystik Dan made history by winning the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. This is one of the most exciting races in horse racing! He ran 1.25 miles (about 2 kilometers) and won by just a "nose," which means he was barely ahead of the second-place horse. This was a thrilling victory!
Preakness and Belmont Stakes
After the Kentucky Derby, Mystik Dan competed in the other two Triple Crown races:
- On May 18, 2024, he ran in the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico. He finished second in this Grade I race, running 1.1875 miles (about 1.9 kilometers).
- On June 8, 2024, he raced in the Belmont Stakes at Saratoga. This race is 1.25 miles long. He finished eighth in this race.
