History of Nässjö
For many years, Nässjö was a small farming village. Everything changed when the Swedish railway system was built. The main southern railway line passed through Nässjö in 1864.
Nässjö as a Railway Hub
Nässjö became a very important railway junction. This was because of its central location in Sweden. Other railway lines were opened later. A line to Katrineholm opened in 1874. The line to Oskarshamn also opened that year. A line to Halmstad opened in 1882. The line to Kalmar opened in 1914. Today, Nässjö is special. It is the only place in Sweden where railways meet from six different directions.
Growth and Industry
Because of the railways, many industries moved to Nässjö. The town's population grew quickly. Wood industries were very important. This was due to the many forests in the Småland province. Factories started making wooden chairs, like the Windsor chair.
Nässjö wanted to become a city. It was granted a special permission called a charter in 1914. This made it one of the Cities of Sweden, but this system no longer exists. Since 1971, Nässjö has been the main town of the larger Nässjö Municipality.
The town's population kept growing throughout the 20th century. In the 1940s, companies started making electrical equipment. The company Eldon AB was the biggest employer for a long time.
