History
How Katrineholm Started
The name Katrineholm comes from a large house. This house was named after Catherina Gyllenhorn. She used to live there a long time ago. The town started to grow because of its railways. It became a place where important train lines met. These lines connected Stockholm to Gothenburg and Stockholm to Malmö. By 1917, about 6,000 people lived in Katrineholm. In 1971, it became the main town for the Katrineholm Municipality.
Katrineholm Today
Katrineholm used to have many factories. Big companies like Ericsson and Scania had businesses here. They provided many jobs. However, in the 1990s, some of these companies hired fewer people.
Today, many people who live in Katrineholm work in other cities. They often travel to Stockholm. This is easy because the train connections are fast and comfortable.
During the 1970s and 1980s, the town's bandy team was very good. Bandy is a sport similar to ice hockey. They won the Swedish national league in 1969, 1970, and 1972. The main office for the Federation of International Bandy is in Katrineholm.
The 1985 movie On the loose was filmed in Katrineholm. This movie featured the famous rock band Europe.
