Nyköping (pronounced like "new-shew-ping") is a cool city in Sweden. It's the main town of Nyköping Municipality and the capital of Södermanland County. About 38,000 people live here.
If you include the nearby area of Arnö, the population goes up to over 36,000. Arnö is often thought of as part of Nyköping. The city also connects with the town of Oxelösund, which is about 10 kilometers (6 miles) south.
The name Nyköping means "Newmarket" in English. "Ny" means "new," and "köping" is an old Swedish word for a market place. This name first appeared on coins around 1230. Before that, the town was called Aros.
Nyköping is a coastal city, located near the Baltic Sea. The Nyköpingsån and Kilaån rivers flow through the city and into the sea. The Nyköpingsån river actually splits the city into two parts: east and west.
The land around Nyköping was once an archipelago (many islands) thousands of years ago. This is because of something called post-glacial rebound. This means the land slowly rose after the last ice age. The highest point in the city is 59 meters (194 feet) at Ekensberg.
Nyköping is also home to Stockholm Skavsta Airport. This airport is less than 10 kilometers (6 miles) from the city center. Nyköping is about 100 kilometers (62 miles) south of Stockholm. It's also 60 kilometers (37 miles) east of Norrköping, which is a bigger city nearby.

History of Nyköping
People have lived in the Nyköping area since about 2000 BC. Around 1000 AD, in the early medieval age, Nyköping was an important capital. It was one of many small kingdoms in Sweden.
In the 13th century, people started building the Nyköping Fortress. This fortress became the strongest in Sweden in the next century. The city's coat of arms (its symbol) probably shows this fortress or one of its towers.
A famous event called the Nyköping Banquet happened here in 1317. King Birger of Sweden captured his two brothers. He did this to get revenge for bad things they had done to him. He imprisoned them until they died.
Nyköping officially became a city in 1444. In the 16th century, Duke Charles made Nyköping his home. He later became King Charles IX of Sweden. During this time, Nyköping grew a lot and was very important.
Sadly, big fires damaged the city and the fortress in 1665. It happened again in 1719 when Russian troops attacked. But the city was rebuilt with the street plan you see today.
Nyköping became an industrial city quite early. In the early 1800s, textile factories opened. More people moved to Nyköping as its industries grew. A company called C.A. Wedholms started making milk churns in 1879. Wedholms still makes milk cooling tanks in Nyköping today.
Nyköping in the 20th Century
The company Nordiska Kompaniet had a furniture factory in Nyköping. This led to a new company called ANA. ANA built American and English cars under license, like Plymouth and Hillman.
Later, Saab Automobile bought ANA. This made SAAB the biggest employer in Nyköping in the 1980s. But when GM bought SAAB, the main office moved away. About two thousand people in Nyköping lost their jobs.
Military History of Nyköping
Nyköping was an important base for the Swedish Air Force's reconnaissance planes. From 1941 to 1980, Stockholm Skavsta Airport was home to the Södermanland Wing (F 11). This was the only special reconnaissance wing in the Swedish Air Force. The city also had the Swedish Army's flying school from 1963 to 1985.
Geography of Nyköping
Where is Nyköping?
Nyköping is about 100 kilometers (62 miles) southwest of Sweden's capital, Stockholm. It's located right by the Baltic Sea. It's also about 60 kilometers (37 miles) northeast of Norrköping. You can easily reach both cities by highway.
Nyköping is on the same latitude (north-south line) as Churchill, Manitoba in Canada. Churchill is known as the "polar bear capital of the world"! This shows how much warmer Nyköping's climate is, even though it's so far north.
Living Environment
The Nyköpingsån river flows through the center of Nyköping. It divides the city into an east and west side. There are seven bridges for cars and seven more for people walking or biking. This makes it easy to get around town.
The smaller Kilaån river separates Nyköping from Arnö. The Stadsfjärden (City Bay) also separates them. This bay stretches down to Oxelösund. People use Stadsfjärden for boat trips and canoeing. There's even a famous canoeing stadium here!
Nyköping's port is mainly for civil boats, not big cargo ships. This is because it's about 15 kilometers (9 miles) from the open sea. The city is mostly flat, especially downtown. But there are some hills in the northern parts, reaching almost 50 meters (164 feet) high.

A new high-speed train line called Ostlänken is being planned. It will go from Stockholm to Linköping. Nyköping will have two stops on this new line: one at a new train station and one at Skavsta Airport. This new railway will eventually connect to another high-speed line. This will make it possible to travel from Stockholm to Gothenburg in just two hours! It's expected to be ready between 2033 and 2035.
Air Travel
Stockholm-Skavsta Airport is close to Nyköping. It offers flights within Europe with airlines like Ryanair and Wizz Air. The airport is about 10 kilometers (6 miles) outside the city. You can get there by bus from the city center.

Climate
Nyköping has a climate that's a mix of oceanic and continental. This means it has warm summers and winters that are usually around freezing. Snowfall can vary a lot each winter.
Summers usually have high temperatures between 20°C (68°F) and 23°C (73°F). But both summers and winters can be much warmer or colder than average. Temperatures above 30°C (86°F) happen sometimes, but not very often.
Winters are usually milder because of the Gulf Stream from the west and the Baltic Sea to the east. But sometimes, very cold air can come in, making it cold for a long time. The warmest time of year is often in the second half of summer.
Because Nyköping is by the sea, heat waves are often not as strong here. This means the nights are usually very mild.
