Nyköping Municipality (called Nyköpings kommun in Swedish) is a local area in southeast Sweden. It's part of Södermanland County. The main town, Nyköping, is where most people live and where the local government is based. Nyköping is also the capital of Södermanland County.

The municipality was first formed in 1971. It combined the City of Nyköping with many other smaller areas. In 1992, it was divided into three parts, creating Gnesta Municipality and Trosa Municipality. The rural parts of Nyköping Municipality today are a mix of older historical districts.

Nyköping town is located on an inlet from the sea. It has a port for tourists that sometimes freezes in winter. The coastline here is wild and rugged. The area has four clear seasons. Winter snow can vary, but summer nights by the sea are often warm. The Nyköpingsån is the biggest river in the municipality. It flows through a lake area around Vrena village, including Yngaren and Långhalsen lakes. The largest lake in the wider river system is Båven. Other rivers like Kilaån and Svärtaån also flow into the Baltic Sea here.

Most people in the rural areas live in many small inland villages. Stigtomta is the largest of these. To the west of Nyköping town, along the Kila river valley, about 4,400 people live in three main districts. Other parts of the municipality are not as crowded. Tystberga is the main village in the eastern rural areas, and Nävekvarn is the main town on the southern coast. Both are quite isolated.

Exploring Nyköping's Geography

This section looks at the different towns and natural features within Nyköping Municipality.

Main Towns and Villages

Here are the larger towns and villages in the municipality, each with more than 200 people. Many of these used to be the main places of older rural areas.

  • Nyköping (the main town)
  • Arnö (part of the Nyköping urban area)
  • Bergshammar
  • Buskhyttan
  • Enstaberga
  • Jönåker
  • Nävekvarn
  • Runtuna
  • Sjösa
  • Stavsjö
  • Stigtomta
  • Svalsta
  • Vrena
  • Tystberga
  • Ålberga

Out of these, only Buskhyttan, Nävekvarn, and Sjösa are right on the coast or very close to it. The others are further inland. Nävekvarn is the only other place besides Nyköping that has a harbor and a seaside feel.

There are also many smaller settlements that are not big enough to be officially listed. Some important ones include Aspa, Bränn-Ekeby, Koppartorp, Lappetorp, Lid, Lästringe, Ripsa, Råby, and Svärta. Coastal areas with a mix of homes and holiday houses include Hummelvik, Horn, Skeppsvik, Svärdsklova, Uttervik, and Örstig.

The western part of the municipality's rural area has more people than the eastern side. Towns like Stigtomta and the group of villages Bergshammar, Svalsta, and Enstaberga are in the west. Skavsta Airport is also located in this western part. In 2018, about two-thirds of the rural population lived in the western half of the municipality.

However, most of the municipality's residents live in the urban area of Nyköping itself.

Lakes and Rivers

Nyköping Municipality has a long coastline along the Baltic Sea. It also has several freshwater lakes. The two largest lakes are Yngaren and Båven. Both of these lakes are connected to the sea by the Nyköpingsån river. This river is quite narrow and flows through Nyköping town. It enters the town after passing through Långhalsen lake, which is about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) north of Nyköping.

Understanding the Population

This section shares information about the people living in Nyköping Municipality. The data comes from the 2022 Swedish general election and official statistics.

In total, 57,507 people live in the municipality. This includes 43,569 Swedish citizens who are old enough to vote. In the 2022 election, 50.6% of voters chose parties from the left side of politics, and 48.1% chose parties from the right side.

The municipality has 37 voting districts. Looking at the middle values across these districts, about 82% of people are employed. About 85% of residents have a Swedish background, meaning they were born in Sweden with at least one Swedish-born parent. About 15% have a foreign background, meaning they were born abroad or have two foreign-born parents. The average monthly income was about 25,988 Swedish kronor. About 36% of adults have a college degree. Some of the larger districts have lower average incomes, less employment, fewer college degrees, and more people with a foreign background.

Local Businesses and Jobs

Nyköping Municipality is home to 3,000 companies. More than half of these are small businesses run by just one person. Only 80 companies have more than 25 employees, and 33 of those have more than 50 employees.

A former military airfield in the municipality is now a civilian airport. It is called Stockholm-Skavsta Airport.

Education in Nyköping

Nyköping is where you'll find the Nyköpings Gymnasium. This is the main public high school in the municipality. It was formed by combining two older schools, Gripen and Tessin. Gripen was known for its science and technical programs. Tessin was known for its strong programs in humanities, arts, and social studies.

Historical Tourist Spot: Nyköping Castle

Nyköpingshus is a very old castle from the Middle Ages. Thousands of tourists visit it every year. In summer, they often put on an outdoor play called Nyköpings gästabud (Nyköping Banquet). This play tells the story of events from the 14th century.

The story is about King Birger Magnusson and Queen Märta. They invited King Birger's two brothers, Valdemar and Erik, to the castle. The king pretended it was a friendly banquet to make peace after a civil war. During that war, Valdemar and Erik had actually put Birger in prison.

But at the banquet in Nyköpingshus, King Birger arrested Valdemar and Erik instead. He threw them into the dungeon. Legend says they starved to death there. Soon after, supporters of Valdemar and Erik forced King Birger and Queen Märta to escape to Denmark.
