Nóvita is a small town and a municipality (which is like a local government area) in the Chocó Department of Colombia. It's a place with a rich history and a unique environment.
Nóvita was once the very first capital of the Chocó Province. For a long time, it was a major center for gold mining. Many of the people who live here are Afro-Colombians, meaning they are descendants of African people who came to Colombia.
Back in the 1850s, getting things to Nóvita was quite a challenge. Because the area has lots of mountains, heavy rain, and many rivers, supplies and even people had to be carried into town by porters.
