NHS Argyll and Clyde was a health organization in western Scotland. It was part of the National Health Service in Scotland. This organization helped provide healthcare services to people living in the areas of Argyll and Bute, East Renfrewshire, and West Dunbartonshire.
It managed a large budget of about £434 million each year. This money was used to care for around 423,500 people. NHS Argyll and Clyde worked to make sure people in its region got the medical care they needed.

What Was NHS Argyll and Clyde?
NHS Argyll and Clyde was a special type of organization called a Health Board. In Scotland, Health Boards are responsible for planning and delivering healthcare services. They make sure hospitals, clinics, and other health services run smoothly.
This particular Health Board covered a large area of about 32,500 square kilometers (12,500 square miles). It played a big role in the lives of many Scottish families.
Why Did NHS Argyll and Clyde Close?
Like many organizations, NHS Argyll and Clyde faced some challenges. In 2002, there were concerns about how the organization was being managed. Some leaders left their positions after a report looked into these issues.
The organization also started to have financial difficulties, meaning it owed a lot of money. Because of these problems, the Scottish government decided to make a change.
The Decision to Split
In May 2005, the Scottish government announced they were thinking about closing NHS Argyll and Clyde. They started asking people for their opinions on this idea in August 2005. This process of asking for opinions is called a "consultation."
After hearing from many people, the health minister, Andy Kerr, announced a big decision on December 8, 2005. He said that NHS Argyll and Clyde would be split into different parts.
The Final Change
On March 31, 2006, NHS Argyll and Clyde officially closed down. Its responsibilities and resources were then given to two other existing Health Boards. These new organizations were NHS Highland and NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.
The area that NHS Argyll and Clyde used to cover was divided between these two new boards. The region of Argyll and Bute Council became part of NHS Highland. The rest of the area joined NHS Greater Glasgow, which then became known as NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. This change helped to reorganize healthcare services in western Scotland.
