Early Life and Big Break
Ahmad Nabil Ahmad was born on September 26, 1983, in Mambau, a town in the state of Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia.
In 2008, Nabil was working as a motorcycle courier in Mambau. He earned about RM600 (around US$143) each month. He then moved to Kuala Lumpur for work. A friend, as a joke, signed him up for an audition for Raja Lawak. This was a Malaysian reality show looking for new comedy stars. Nabil had not seen the show before, but he decided to try out anyway.
Nabil's Entertainment Journey
After several weeks of competition, Nabil won the second season of Raja Lawak. This made him very famous as a comedian. Because of this win, some people still call him "Nabil Raja Lawak."
As an actor, Nabil has appeared in comedy movies like Pisau Cukur (2009) and Berani Punya Budak (2012). He also acted in dramas such as Geng Bas Sekolah (2013) and Bila Kau Datang (2015).
From Comedy to Hosting
Nabil slowly moved from being mainly a comedian to hosting television shows. He has said that being a comedian can be very stressful. You are expected to make people laugh right away. He finds hosting more relaxing and less pressured. It still lets him show his funny side by telling jokes.
His first hosting job was for the entertainment talk show MeleTOP, which started in 2012. He still hosts this show. In 2014, he also began hosting the music competition Gegar Vaganza. Both shows are on Astro Ria. Nabil was the first host of MeleTOP with Neelofa. He continued hosting the show after she left in 2019. Many people think of Nabil when they hear the name MeleTOP. He has also hosted the yearly entertainment awards show Anugerah MeleTOP Era.
In 2015, Nabil became the host of HBO Sentral. This is a monthly show that highlights programs from HBO Asia. He took over from Lisa Surihani. In 2016, Nabil co-hosted Ceria I-Star, a children's Islamic reality show on Astro Ceria. In 2017, HBO sent him to Hollywood to interview stars at the 89th Academy Awards. In 2018, he won the Best Entertainment Presenter/Host award at the Asian Academy Creative Awards in Cannes, France.
New Ventures
In 2017, Nabil started looking for business chances outside of just performing. He wanted to have other ways to earn money. He created an entertainment production company. This company has made TV series and a movie.
In 2018, Nabil wrote his first movie made for television, The Hantus. This was a Malaysian horror comedy film. He also directed it with Helmi Yusof, making it his first time directing a film. The Hantus was released on June 15, 2018. Most of the filming happened in Kuala Lumpur, Gombak, and Genting Highlands. In 2019, he started his own YouTube channel called Lupk TV.
Personal Life
In 2011, Nabil married Zira Ayoub, who used to be a flight attendant for AirAsia. As of 2020, they have three daughters.
Even with his success in entertainment, Nabil has faced financial challenges. During the 2020 Malaysia movement control order, he helped many friends from his hometown in Negeri Sembilan. They had lost their jobs and were struggling. Nabil was thankful for government help with debts, as he could not pay them due to canceled jobs and activities.
