Juan Ignacio Duato Barcia, known to many as Nacho Duato, is a famous Spanish modern ballet dancer and choreographer. He was born on January 8, 1957. Duato has led several important ballet companies around the world.

Nacho Duato's Career

Nacho Duato started his dance training at several well-known schools. He studied at the Rambert School in London. He also attended Maurice Béjart's Rudra School in Brussels. Later, he trained at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in New York City.

Early Dance Journey

Duato began his dancing career in Stockholm with the Cullberg Ballet. After that, he joined the Nederlands Dans Theater. He worked there for ten years under the artistic director Jiří Kylián.

In 1983, Duato created his first important dance piece. It was called Jardí tancat, which means 'Shut garden' in Catalan. He used music by Maria del Mar Bonet for this work. This choreography won first prize at a competition in Cologne, Germany.

Becoming a Choreographer

By 1988, Nacho Duato became a resident choreographer for the NDT. He shared this role with Hans van Manen and Jiří Kylián. This meant he was one of the main people creating new dances for the company.

From 1990 to 2011, Duato was the artistic director of the Compania Nacional de Danza. This is a very important role in the dance world.

Leading Ballet Companies

After his time in Spain, Duato moved to Russia. From 2011 to 2014, he led the ballet company at the Mikhaylovsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg.

In 2014, Nacho Duato became the general and artistic director of the Berlin State Ballet. He worked there until 2019. After leaving Berlin, Duato returned to the Mikhaylovsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg. He took up his previous role as artistic director of their ballet company once more.

Awards and Recognitions

Nacho Duato has received many awards for his amazing work in dance.

  • 1983: He won the First Prize at the Internationaler Choreographischer Wettbewerb in Köln for his ballet Jardí tancat.
  • 1987: He received the VSCD Gouden Dansprijs for his excellent dancing skills.
  • 1995: The French Embassy in Spain gave him the title of Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. This is a special honor for people in the arts.
  • 1998: The Spanish Council awarded him the Gold Medal for Merit in the Fine Arts.
  • 2000: He won the Prix Benois de la Danse at the Stuttgart Opera. This award was for his choreography called Multiplicity. Forms of Silence and Emptiness.
  • 2003: He received the Spanish National Dance Award (Premio Nacional de Danza) for his choreography.
