Naciones Unidas National Park is a cool forest park in Guatemala. It's about 21 kilometers (13 miles) south of Guatemala City. You can find it near Lake Amatitlán, in a town called Villa Nueva.
This park is super important because it's one of the last big natural areas left near the busy Guatemala City. It covers about 4.91 square kilometers (1.9 square miles).
Park History
Naciones Unidas National Park became a "National Park" a long time ago. This happened on May 26, 1955, by a special government agreement. It is one of the oldest national parks in all of Guatemala.
Today, a group called Fundación Defensores de la Naturaleza helps manage the park. They have been taking care of it since 1997. This group works hard to protect the park's nature and keep it safe for everyone.
What You Can See and Do
Many people visit Naciones Unidas National Park because it's close to the city. It's a great place to spend time outdoors with your family and friends.
From the park, you can see amazing views of the Pacaya Volcano. You can also look out over the beautiful Lake Amatitlán.
The park has lots of fun things to explore:
- There are many walking trails where you can hike and enjoy nature.
- You'll find picnic areas perfect for a meal outdoors.
- The park even has cool replicas of ancient temples from Tikal.
- There's also a copy of the central park from Antigua Guatemala.
Animals and Plants
Naciones Unidas National Park is home to many different kinds of animals. Experts have studied the park and found lots of wildlife living there.
You might spot some of these animals:
- At least 111 different kinds of birds fly through the park.
- There are 11 types of mammals, like small animals and maybe even deer.
- You can find 36 different kinds of reptiles, such as lizards and snakes.
- There are also 5 types of amphibians, like frogs and toads.
The park also protects many important trees and plants. Some of the trees you can see include:
- Cypress (Cupressus lucitanica)
- Pine (Pinus oocarpa)
- Cedar (Cedrella tonduzi)
- Loquat (Eriobotrya japonica)
- Avocado (Persea americana)
- Guava (Psidion Guajava)
Park authorities work hard to protect and monitor all these amazing species.
