Later, she wrote for university and local newspapers too. When she was 20, she even got to write articles for a magazine called Psychology Today in New York City!
Early Career and Film Festivals
In 2001, Nadia started a film festival called ICED IN BLACK. This festival showed movies made by or about Black Canadians. It became a yearly event that traveled to many cities across Canada. She also helped with other film festivals, like the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).
In 2009, Nadia became one of the first teachers at the Africentric Alternative School in Toronto. This was Canada's first public school of its kind. It focused on teaching students about Black Canadian experiences and history.
Becoming a Published Author
In 2010, Nadia took a class on writing for children. There, she wrote the first version of Malaika's Costume. Around that time, she faced a health challenge. This experience made her even more determined to get her stories published.
Her first two books, Music and Media, came out in 2015. They were part of a series called Sankofa.
The Malaika Series
Nadia's first picture book, Malaika's Costume, was published in 2016. The pictures in the book were drawn by Irene Luxbacher. The story is about a young girl getting ready for Carnival in the Caribbean. Her mom is away working in Canada.
The story for Malaika's Costume won an award for books that show different cultures. It also received an honorable mention from the Américas Award for children's books.
In the next book, Malaika's Winter Carnival, Malaika moves to Canada. She learns to live in a new place. A book review said that Nadia "tenderly" showed the differences between Caribbean and Canadian cultures.
