About Nadia Hohn

Her Early Life and Education

Nadia Hohn was born in Canada. Her parents came from Jamaica. She grew up and still lives in Toronto, Ontario. Nadia is an elementary school teacher there.

She started writing and drawing her own books when she was only six years old. In high school, she wrote for her school newspaper. Later, she wrote for university and community papers. When she was 20, she worked as an intern in New York City. She wrote articles for a magazine called Psychology Today.

In 2001, Nadia started a film festival called ICED IN BLACK. It showed movies made by or about Black Canadians. This festival grew bigger each year. By 2003, it traveled to nine cities across Canada. Nadia also volunteered with other film festivals. These included the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).

In 2009, Nadia became one of the first teachers at the Africentric Alternative School in Toronto. This was Canada’s first public school of its kind.

Becoming a Writer

In 2010, Nadia took a writing course in Toronto. There, she wrote the first version of Malaika's Costume. Later that year, she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. This experience made her even more determined to get her stories published.

Her first two books, Music and Media, came out in 2015. They were part of a series called Sankofa.

Nadia's first picture book, Malaika's Costume, was published in 2016. Irene Luxbacher drew the pictures for the book. It tells the story of a young girl getting ready for Carnival in the Caribbean. Her mother is away working in Canada. The story won an award for promoting diversity in children's books. It also received an honorable mention from the Américas Award in 2017.

A follow-up book, Malaika's Winter Carnival, came out next. In this story, Malaika moves to Canada. She learns to adapt to her new life there. A review said the book gently compared Caribbean and Canadian cultures.

Inspiring Stories and Teaching

From 2016 to 2017, Nadia taught in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. She also traveled during this time. While abroad, she worked on Harriet Tubman Freedom Fighter. This early reader book was published in 2018.

In 2019, Nadia's picture book about Jamaican poet Louise Bennett-Coverley was released. It is called A Likkle Miss Lou: How Jamaican Poet Louise Bennett Coverley Found Her Voice. CBC Books named it one of the best Canadian children's books of 2019.

Nadia has taught creative writing courses for children. She has taught at the University of Toronto and other colleges. She also gives presentations at schools, libraries, and festivals. She has shared her stories in Jamaica, Trinidad, the UAE, the UK, the US, and all across Canada.
