Early Life of Nadia Lutfi
Nadia Lutfi was born in Cairo, Egypt. Her birth name was Poula Mohamed Mostafa Shafiq. Her father was Mohamed Mostafa, and her mother was Fatma.
Nadia Lutfi's Acting Career
Nadia started acting as a hobby when she was young. At age 10, she performed in a school play and did very well. In 1958, when she was 24, she was about to start her movie career. At that time, Omar Sharif and Faten Hamama were huge stars in Egyptian cinema.
Faten Hamama had just starred in a hit movie called La Anam. In that film, her character's name was Nadia Lotfy. Poula liked this name and decided to use it as her own stage name. She changed her first name to Nadia and used a similar last name, Lutfi.
First Movie Roles
After changing her name, director Ramses Naguib noticed the young actress. Her first movie was a simple black-and-white drama called Soultan in 1958. Her second movie was a smaller part in a very important film of its time, Cairo Station.
In 1963, Nadia Lutfi played a Frankish woman warrior. This was in the movie Naser Salah el Dine. She wore full armor to fight in battles. Her character's Christian-Arab lover was played by Salah Zulfikar.
Playing Different Characters
Nadia Lutfi took on many interesting roles. In the 1964 movie Lil-Rigal Faqat, she and co-star Soad Hosny played geologists. They couldn't find jobs because they were women. So, they dressed up as men to get work. This meant they had to hide their true feelings.
In the mid-1960s, she starred in two films based on stories by Naguib Mahfouz. He was a famous author who won the Nobel Prize. One of her later roles was in Abi Foq Al-Shagara (1969). She played a nightclub dancer who falls for a much younger man. She then finds out she knew his father well in the past. She also starred in El Momia (1969).
Nadia Lutfi made several movies with Soad Hosny. One of these was Al-Saba' Banat (The Seven Girls).
Later Career
In the 1970s, the "Golden Age" of Egyptian films began to end. Nadia Lutfi's career also slowed down. Some of her important films from this time include Regal Bila Malameh (1972). She played a "night girl" in this movie, and it was very popular. She also starred in El-Okhwa El-A'daa (1974) and Badiaa Masabni (1975).
Nadia Lutfi made nearly 50 films in her first 11 years. But in the next decade, she only made three. She stopped working in films after 1981.
