Soad Muhammad Kamal Hosny (Arabic: سُعاد حسني; born January 26, 1943 – died June 21, 2001) was a famous Egyptian actress. People called her the "Cinderella of the Screen." She was one of the most important actresses in the Middle East and the Arab world.

Soad became a big star in the late 1950s. She acted in more than 83 films between 1959 and 1991. Nine of her films are among the top 100 films in Egyptian cinema history. Most of her movies were made in the 1960s and 1970s. Her last movie was The Shepherd and the Women in 1991. Her former husband, Ali Badrakhan, directed this film.

Early Life and Family

Soad Muhammad Kamal Hosny was born in the Bulaq area of Cairo, Egypt. Her father was Mohammad Hosni, a well-known calligrapher. He was from Damascus, which is now in Syria. Soad's family home was called "the artists' home." Many famous artists from across the Arab world visited her father there.

Her father was known for his art, including making frames for silent movies. Several of his children became artists too. Soad's half-sister, Nagat, was a famous actress and singer. Her half-brother, Ezz Eddin Hosni, was a composer. He taught Soad and Nagat music and singing.

Acting Career

Soad started her career very young, at just three years old. She sang on a popular Egyptian children's TV show called Papa Sharo. She acted in many different types of movies. These included funny comedies, romantic films, and even political stories.

Her first movie was Hassan and Nayima in 1959. She worked with many top Egyptian film stars. Some of these stars were Omar Sharif, Salah Zulfikar, and Rushdy Abaza. One of her most famous roles was in Watch Out for ZouZou (1972). In this film, she played a college student who fell in love with her professor.

Other important films include Money and Women (1960) and A Date at the Tower (1962). In 1964, she starred in For Men Only. She played a girl who dressed as a man to work on an oil project. This movie was a huge success.

Soad also starred in Too Young for Love (1966). In 1970, she was in the political film Sunset and Sunrise. She worked with director Youssef Chahine on two films: The Choice (1970) and Those People of the Nile (1972).

In 1974, she starred in Whom Should We Shoot?. Her next role was a student and political activist in Karnak (1975). This film was based on a novel by Naguib Mahfouz.

In films like Shafika and Metwali (1979) and People on the Top (1981), she used music to tell powerful stories. These stories gave a voice to people who were struggling. Because of these strong, political roles, she was seen as a very smart actress.

Soad Hosny was known as the "Cinderella of the Screen" throughout her life. She worked with every important Egyptian director in the 1960s and 1970s. Soad Hosny was married four times. Around 1968, she married Salah Kurayyem, a cinematographer. This marriage lasted about one year. In 1970, she married Egyptian film director Ali Badrakhan. They were married for about eleven years.

After that, she married Zaki Fatin Abdel Wahab in 1981. This marriage lasted only five months. Her fourth and final marriage was to screenwriter Maher Awad.

Soad was also linked to other famous people. One was the Egyptian film star Abdel Halim Hafez. Even though she never wore a wedding dress in her own marriages, she wore many on screen in her films. Her first movie husband was Salah Zulfikar in Money and Women (1960).

Soad Hosny passed away on June 21, 2001. She died after falling from a balcony in London, England. Her body was flown back to Cairo, Egypt. More than 10,000 people attended her funeral there. She was buried in a family plot outside Cairo. Soad did not have any children. Her last husband, Maher Awad, survived her.

Soad Hosny won many awards for her acting. She received the Best Actress Award from the National Festival in 1971. She also won the Ministry of Culture Award five times. The Egyptian Film Association gave her an award five times as well.

She won the Best Actress Award at the Alexandria International Film Festival. In 1979, President Anwar Sadat gave her a special certificate of appreciation. In 1980, she won the Best Actress Award at the State Film Awards for her movie The Savage.

Legacy and Impact

Soad Hosny's work continues to be important. In 2013, a Lebanese filmmaker named Rania Stephan made a film about Soad. It was called The Three Disappearances of Soad Hosni. This film used parts of Soad's movies to tell her story. It also showed the history of Egyptian cinema from the 1950s to the 1990s. This period was when Egyptian cinema was at its best.

One of Soad Hosny's songs, "I'm going down to the Square," became very popular. It was even used as an "anthem" during the 2011 Egyptian revolution. On January 26, 2022, Google Doodle celebrated Soad Hosny's 79th birthday.
