Nadine Trintignant (born 11 November 1934) is a famous French filmmaker and writer. She is well-known for making movies about families and relationships. Some of her popular films include Ça n'arrive qu'aux autres and L'été prochain. Her film Mon amour, mon amour was even nominated for a top award, the Palme d'Or, at the 1967 Cannes Film Festival.

About Nadine Trintignant

Nadine Trintignant was born in the city of Nice, France. She has two brothers, Christian Marquand and Serge Marquand, who were also actors.

In 1960, Nadine married the French actor Jean-Louis Trintignant. He had already appeared in some of her early films. They had three children together: a daughter named Marie Trintignant, who became an actress; another daughter named Pauline; and a son named Vincent Trintignant-Corneau, who is an actor and writer. Nadine and Jean-Louis separated in 1976.

After her separation, Nadine Trintignant became partners with French director Alain Corneau. He later adopted her children, Marie and Vincent. Nadine and Alain lived together for 37 years until he passed away in 2010.

Nadine Trintignant has faced great sadness in her life. In 1970, her nine-month-old daughter Pauline died from crib death. Later, in 2003, her older daughter Marie sadly passed away due to injuries she received.

In her films, Nadine Trintignant often explores themes of family and relationships. She sometimes uses experiences from her own life in her movies. Much of her work happened in the 1970s, a time when many women filmmakers in France were making important progress. Nadine was interested in women's rights and the challenges in relationships, which you can see in films like Mon amour, Mon amour (1967). In 1971, she signed the Manifesto of the 343, a public statement supporting women's rights, published in a French magazine.

Her Career in Film

Early Days in Film

Nadine Trintignant started working in the film industry at age 15. Her first job was as a lab assistant. After that, she worked in different small roles, mostly in editing films.

Her first official job as an assistant editor was for the 1955 film Du rififi chez les hommes. After Rififi, she edited many other films. These included Si Paris nous était conté (1956), Une Parisienne (1957), and Léon Morin, Prêtre (1961).

Nadine Trintignant directed her first short film in 1965, called Fragilité, ton nom est femme. Her first full-length film was Mon amour, mon amour in 1967. This film was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the 1967 Cannes Film Festival, which is a very important award.

After her daughter Pauline passed away in 1970, Trintignant wrote and directed Ça n’arrive qu’aux autres. This film was partly based on her own sad experience. The 1971 movie starred Catherine Deneuve and Marcello Mastroianni as parents dealing with the loss of their baby daughter. Nadine used real images and footage of her own daughter Pauline in the film. She also cast her older daughter Marie in some scenes.

Nadine Trintignant's next film, Défense de savoir, came out in 1973. Then came Le Voyage de noces in 1976. In the 1980s, she continued to write and direct many films. These movies often looked at relationships from a woman's point of view. Examples include Premier Voyage (1980), L'été prochain (1985), and La maison de Jade (1988).

In 1991, Trintignant joined 30 other filmmakers for a project called Contre L'Oubli. This project was for Amnesty International, an organization that works for human rights. They made 30 short films, each focusing on a specific political prisoner and asking for human rights. Trintignant worked with her daughter Marie on a segment about José Ramon Garcia-Gomez from Mexico.

In the 1990s and 2000s, Nadine Trintignant kept making films, often working with her family. Her daughter Marie starred in Rêveuse Jeunesse (1994) and Fugeuses (1995). The film L'insoumise (1996) starred both Marie and Jean-Louis Trintignant. Their son Vincent even helped write it. Their son Vincent also co-wrote L'île Bleu.

Nadine Trintignant's most recent film as a director is Colette, une femme libre from 2003. This film again starred her daughter Marie. Marie's sudden death happened while the film was being made. However, Marie's scenes had already been filmed. So, Nadine finished the movie and dedicated it to her daughter.

Becoming a Novelist

Nadine Trintignant has also written several books. These include Ton Chapeau au vestiaire (1997), Combien d'enfants (2001), and Le Jeune homme de la rue de France (2002).

After her daughter Marie passed away, Nadine Trintignant wrote a book about her, called Marie, ma fille (2003). Since then, she has written more books about her personal life. These include her autobiography J'ai été jeune un jour (2006). She also wrote a collection of short stories about her sadness after Marie's death, called Un étrange peine (2007). She wrote a book about her late partner Alain Corneau, Vers d'autres matins (2012). Her book La voilette de ma mère (2014) is a tribute to her mother.
