Naenae railway station is a train station in Lower Hutt, New Zealand. It serves the areas of Naenae and Avalon. The station is about 18 kilometers (11 miles) north of Wellington.
Trains here are run by Metlink and are called "Matangi" trains. These are electric trains that can carry many passengers. You can catch trains from Naenae to Wellington, Taitā, and Upper Hutt.
The station has one platform in the middle of two train tracks. This is called an island platform. You can get to the platform using a special underground walkway, called a subway. This subway connects to Cambridge Terrace and the Naenae shops on one side, and Oxford Terrace and Avalon on the other.
Station History
Naenae station first opened on January 7, 1946. At that time, it was just a single train line. This line was an extension from Waterloo to Naenae.
For a while, Naenae was the end of the line. But then, in April 1947, the line was extended further to Taitā. At the same time, the train line south of Naenae was made into two tracks. This meant more trains could run.
In February 1953, the double tracks were extended north of Naenae to Taitā. Later that year, on September 12, 1953, the train line through Naenae became electrified. This means trains could now run on electricity. In March 1954, Naenae became part of the main Wairarapa Line. This happened when the line from Taitā to Haywards (now Manor Park) opened.
Station Rebuild
Naenae Station was closed for a few months starting May 14, 2012. This was so the station could be rebuilt and made better. The rebuild included several improvements. Workers built a new shelter on the platform. They also resurfaced the platform itself, making it smoother and safer. The subway that connects the platform to Cambridge and Oxford Terraces was also renovated.
While the station was closed, a special bus service helped people get around. This shuttle bus ran between Naenae and Waterloo Station during busy times on weekdays. The station officially reopened to passengers on August 27, 2012.
In 2018, new automatic gates were put in place. These gates lock shut when a train is coming. They were installed because some people were ignoring the flashing lights at the nearby train crossing. This helps keep everyone safer.
Train Services
Transdev Wellington runs the electric train services for the Greater Wellington Regional Council. These services are part of the "Metlink" brand. They operate on the Hutt Valley Line between Wellington and Upper Hutt, passing through Naenae.
During the day, when it's not rush hour, trains usually run like this:
- There are 2 trains per hour (tph) going to Wellington. These trains stop at all stations along the way.
- There are also 2 trains per hour (tph) going to Upper Hutt. These trains also stop at all stations.
In addition to trains, Metlink bus routes 121 and 130 also serve Naenae station.
