Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Naiomi Tuere Cameron is an American mathematician. She studies a special area of math called combinatorics, which is about counting and arranging things. She is a professor at Spelman College, teaching college students. She also helps lead a group called the National Association of Mathematicians as their vice president. Before this, she taught at Lewis & Clark College in Oregon.

Naiomi Cameron was born in Washington, D.C. and grew up in Providence, Rhode Island. She went to Howard University for all her college studies, earning both her bachelor's degree and her PhD in Mathematics there. In 2019, she was honored by a project called Mathematically Gifted and Black during Black History Month for her achievements in math.

What She Studies

Dr. Cameron's main work in math focuses on counting and arranging different things. She also studies number theory, which is about the properties of numbers.

Her big research project for her PhD in 2002 was called Random Walks, Trees and Extensions of Riordan Group Techniques. This sounds complicated, but it's about how things can move randomly and how different math structures, like trees, can be counted and understood.

Her Work Outside the Classroom

Besides teaching, Dr. Cameron is very involved in the math community. She served as the vice president for the National Association of Mathematicians from 2019 to 2020. This organization works to promote math and support mathematicians, especially those from underrepresented groups.
