Becoming a Star: Project Fame
Nakaaya became famous after appearing on a TV show called "Tusker Project Fame". This was a reality TV show, which means it followed real people as they lived and competed. It was the first show of its kind in the African Great Lakes region.
What Was Project Fame?
The show ran from October to December 2006. It brought together singers who wanted to become stars from Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. They all lived together and received special training. This training helped them learn about the music business. Nakaaya stayed on the show for five weeks out of a total of seven weeks.
Music Career and Hit Songs
After "Tusker Project Fame", Nakaaya went back to Tanzania. She started working on her very first music album.
Releasing Her First Album
In February 2008, Nakaaya released her first album, called Nervous Conditions. She released it on her own, without a big record company at first. The album sold very well, even though it was only available on CDs.
Popular Songs
The first song from the album, "Malaika", became popular on the radio. But her next song, "Mr. Politician", was a huge success! It became a hit all across the African Great Lakes region. The music video for "Mr. Politician" was played a lot on TV, which made Nakaaya very popular. The song was special because it talked about important issues, which is what "political hip hop" often does.
Beyond Music: Goodwill Ambassador
Besides her music, Nakaaya has also worked to help her community. She served as a goodwill Ambassador for the East African Community. This role means she helped promote good relationships and projects among the countries in East Africa.
Signing with Sony BMG
In 2009, Nakaaya signed a record deal with Sony BMG. This happened after she went on a music tour in Denmark. Signing with a big company like Sony BMG was a major step in her career.
